Oh no. I’m late making this post! I do apologize. Events have been rushing by and projects have been piling up. If you are here taking the moment to read this post though, things must be a little calmer for you. “Stop to smell the roses.” A famous saying about slowing down to take in the still beauty around you. But do not be fooled. Beauty is not only visible when you stop for a moment. There is beauty to be caught in the rush as well. Lets start simple. Take a moment to look around you. Enjoy the still beauty of the objects laying to your side; the elegant organization of the items across the room; the intriguing chaos of the pile of items tucked in the corner. Now grab your phone or a camera and snap some quick pictures of these items as you keep the camera in motion sweeping over those “beautiful still”, not pausing to let the camera focus. Do this at different speeds allowing the camera a little bit more or a little bit less time to focus. Now let us look at these pictures after you have grabbed a small collection. Terrible images, aren’t they? You can’t make out a thing. Its all a blur. But wait! What are these splotches of color smearing across the image? That item can be made out a bit; though it looks as if it isn’t exactly there, kind of holographic or ghostly, or like parts of it are shaking. Our featured Designer April Greiman has one such project that examines this view of the world.

When the world around us is moving faster than us, or rather, technically, when we are moving faster than the world around us, solids become transparent, light and color become a substance. Materials become immaterial and immaterial become material, both blending together to distort foreground and background concepts. Greiman does this with more than just motion blurred photos though. Greiman has gladly embraced technology in the use of graphical design receiving credit as “one of the first designers to embrace computer technology as a design tool.” She even takes up some less common routes to organize her personal site.
