Prefix: Willet- (Coastal)

Willets are a grey-brown bird with black and white markings on their wings. There’s apparently two subspecies that are debated to be their own things entirely, but only one of them shows up in California enough to matter.

Locations: On the coast and marshes close by. 

Use: A grey-brown or light brown cat, possibly with a white belly.

Prefix: Wakasagi-

This fish has a Japanese name because it is a Japanese native! It’s small and sort of grey-brown with no notable markings. They appear to be able to live in any type of water, unless my research has led me wrong. They also appear to be the favored model for fish-shaped jerkbait. 

Locations: Anywhere with water.

Use: A small grey-brown cat.

Prefix: Eulachon- (Coastal, NorCal)

Also written as “ooligan” or “hooligan”, for some weird reason, Eulachons are saltwater fish that prefer colder waters. They live in a range stretching from Alaska to the northern part of California. 

Locations: In the northern coast.

Use: A grey-brown cat.

Prefix: Oak-

The many oaks of California are of a brown or grey-brown color and are the creators of acorns, which have their own separate prefix. Oaks have a “native range”, but given how that range does not coincide with the areas I’ve been that oaks are very much populating, I’m inclined to question those maps. 

Locations: In hilly areas with plenty of water. 

Use: A brown or grey-brown cat.

Prefix: Boar-

Wild boars were introduced to California as game animals, and though I haven’t really seen any myself, the internet does say that they exist here. Fun fact: the babies are called squeakers, and a tame pig, if let loose into the wild, can take on the traits of a wild boar within months - lots of hair, tusks, etc. 

Locations: In heavily brushed areas with plenty of water. 

Use: A bulky dark grey-brown cat.

Prefix: Chub-

Chubs are light brown or grey-brown fish that live in fresh water. The smallest species is native to the area around Los Angelos, as a matter of fact, and is incredibly adaptable. The rest are actually really durable too, and seem to prefer warmer waters. 

Locations: Anywhere, but preferably around shallow, warm waters. 

Use: A light brown or grey-brown cat.
