Greyscale + Gradient Map vs. My Coloring style - Joe Shimamura (Cyborg 009)

Did a little "coloring" experiment. I wanted to see how different the coloring results would end up, where I did one sample using the greyscale method + using a gradient map and the other using my regular coloring style. Turns out there is a difference!

I like both results, and there's definitely more I could learn and try to combine from both sides.

Since summer, I started rewatching "Cyborg 009" (2001) because I was trying to prove a point regarding a statement from my sister about said show. Turns out... I got hooked again. This was a childhood show that I rarely managed to watch, but I remembered it. And I've been watching more adaptations since I finished the 2001 show.

Working my way through the 1979 adaption currently, and boy is that a gold mine for certain things!

“UGLY” my new art illustration using grayscale. I have always felt ugly. It’s been years and years since I’ve felt confident in my own skin. I never liked looking at myself in the mirror, and sometimes it feels like I just wanna wear a paper bag to keep everyone from seeing my face. But it’s not just really my face. It’s all of me that I don’t like seeing. I’ve never enjoyed sipping on my cup of stars before. Well at least not for a long time. I hope that there will be a time someday that’ll make me grab my cup of stars, hold it tight in my hands, and enjoy every sip of it once again.

Finished my drawing from the “lily” prompt. I tried coloring over greyscale for the first time. It’s a pretty interesting technique, but I need more practice. I adjusted the color levels afterwards because it looked a little too dull at first.

Greyscales

I'm in some coloring groups and a lot of members enjoy coloring greyscale images - there are several books out there for it, and it's at least mildly popular. What it is if you're not familiar is that the image you're coloring has shades of grey, a bit like a black and white photograph but much softer so that most of it is still white or quite light. I usually see it colored in colored pencils and the advantage for the colorists is that it helps with the shadows and highlights.

And the results, in almost all cases, squicks me right the f out. It's an uncanny valley thing I think because I react strongest to human figures and faces done that way. My reactions always range from "the colors still have a grey tint, it doesn't look nice" to shuddering and making a face because it looks freaky. Anyway, thought I'd share because I wouldn't comment on the pictures within the groups but I wanted to share the general feeling...

Grayscale Coloring in Pigment!

It's finally here: grayscale… in Pigment! Since the inception of the Gallery, colorists have been playing with grayscale images—everything from their own photos to pieces they've purchased or images they've found on the web. We knew that there was a place for grayscale in Pigment and we wanted to elevate the experience by offering grayscale images in a way that allows everyone to participate and explore to their hearts' content. A lot of brainpower went into the implementation of this new category of coloring pages; from market research to coding and testing to the careful curation of images we felt our colorists would enjoy experimenting with. We worked hard to bring this singular and special genre of pages to Pigment and we're overjoyed to see that it has been received so well.

It's been a pleasure to watch the Pigment Gallery fill up with grayscale images from our new books. Many people are remarking that it's their first time working in this genre and they're as thrilled with their results as we are! The colorings we're seeing are all so unique and fascinating and gorgeous that we find ourselves sitting and scrolling, for hours at a time, admiring the published pages with smiles on our faces as we watch our community of colorists dive into this new experience of grayscale coloring.  

And that's really what Pigment has always been about, after all—empowering and equipping artists to delve into the magic and wonder of coloring, learning, growing, sharing, and supporting one another.  We're excited to see this genre continue to be experimented with and enjoyed by our colorists and we can't wait to see more of the incredible colorings that you all have been working on!
