one of luke’s dearest wishes is that he could have had the chance to meet his mother. his earliest memories of motherhood had been of his aunt beru, but once he had learned & understood at a young age that she was not, in fact, his birth mother, the illusion had vanished. he had spent a great deal of time during his childhood constructing pictures & images & ideas of what his mother had been like. his aunt beru & uncle owen had never told him anything about her. other than the fact that they had met her only once, & that she had died.
his question to leia, if she remembered her birth mother, had been a hopeful one. if she remembered their mother’s name, or how she looked, luke was sure he could find some information on her. but leia hadn’t known much more than him.
it wasn’t until a few months after the battle of endor that he thought to ask ben’s ghost about his mother. as soon as he thought to, it seemed silly to him that he hadn’t before -- but the last five years had been so hectic & so rushed, it had never occurred to him to ask ben if he knew of his & leia’s mother.
ben’s answer had been cryptic, to luke’s disappointment.
at that point, luke had done something he hadn’t dared to do since endor. he meditated & reached out to his father’s spirit in the force -- after making contact with anakin’s force ghost, luke practically begged him for his mother’s name. anakin gave it to him. padmé naberrie amidala.
after that luke spent endless hours in the senate’s archives, looking up every holo of her speeches he could find, reading through every single mention of her in every bill, in every memo. he told leia, & they took up the research together -- leia had heard of senator amidala, of course, during her days in the imperial senate, but now there was a renewed interest.
there are quite a few issues of galactic importance which take up his time & attention for a long while after endor, mostly having to do with the formation of the new republic, but as soon as he finds a few weeks’ leave, he travels to naboo in order to see his mother’s homeworld.
he spends a great deal of time at his mother’s grave. he visits there every day he’s on naboo. sometimes he spends his time meditating, sometimes he just sits there twirling a flower through his fingers & staring at the place where was was laid. he gets a tour of the royal palace, due to his status, & spends an inordinate amount of time staring at the stained glass pieces depicting his mother & her reign. he doesn’t tell anyone that he’s her son.
that is, he doesn’t tell anyone until his second visit to naboo. on that visit, about a year after his first one, he goes to the lake country to find the naberrie family. he reveals himself to them, expressing a desire to know his mother’s side of the family & a desire to learn more about her. after some suspicion & disbelief on the part of more extended relatives, he’s immediately recognized by his mother’s sister, sola.
they welcome him & give him a place to stay, & all the information on padmé he could possibly want.
he makes a point to visit naboo as often as he can, though with his schedule & responsibilities, it’s never as often as he would like.
