Life is kicking my ass right now with a flu. Luckily I can still work on “Rebecca (Song 122).”
I smoked cannabis right before recording “Grey to White,” which is a song about #Gandalf from #LordoftheRings. The cannabis didn’t transform the creative experience like I thought it might, but it did leave a lasting memory of the recording session. That was a fun day.
Cannabis affects everyone differently. It seems to turn me into a dumber version of myself. It does not improve my creativity or motivation. It does make movies, music and food a lot more enjoyable to consume though.
This song was written on a Friday night, recorded on Saturday morning, and completed by Sunday night. I miss those quick turnarounds. On average, each GoBoy 3 song took four days to complete, GoBoy 4 songs took six days, GoBoy 5 songs took fourteen days, and GoBoy 6 songs took thirty days. I’d like to get back to 2-3 weeks per song as soon as I can.
The chorus lyrics say: from grey to white. I’ve come back from death, from darkness to the bright, to fight for life. I’ve slain demons. I’ve slain many things that would make a grown man cry so we can thrive.
I sing like an old man in the chorus, with a lower formant and shakier voice, to mimic how Gandalf might sound if you put a microphone to his face.
Throughout GoBoy 3 and 4, a lesson was relearned after a seven-year hiatus: listeners can sense any hesitancy in your voice. Confidence is important in a recording booth. This rediscovery would lead me to experiment with drinking while recording GoBoy 6. What results would liquid courage bring? Just an experiment (excerpt from post 50).
The production quality in this song is kinda meh. My vocals do not have enough strength. I should have belted out the vocals, similar to the singing style of GoBoy 6 and 7 (excerpt from post 50).
In April, 2021, almost all of GoBoy 3, 4 and 5‘s songs were restructured to be under 3 minutes (preferably under 2m 30s), including this song. In an attempt to increase replay value in this streaming era, most of GoBoy’s songs are now purposely around 2m 20s (excerpts from post 38).
A bass boost was added to songs 37-99 in Nov, 2021, while I was stuck at home with covid. As a result, this song feels more powerful. The bass boost isn’t a simple plugin nonchalantly added to each song. It’s a process that took about 3.5 hours per song, or one whole month to complete all songs. Admittedly, I pushed the bass boost a little too far for some of them. The bass in some songs sounds like a freaking earthquake (unnecessarily pronounced low frequencies 20 - 50 Hz). Might dial that back someday. The bass boost was also applied to every song on GoBoy 6 and beyond (excerpt from post 37).
