Grief is a cricket chirping in your bedroom. You wake to it, rise to it, sleep to it. You cannot find the cricket. Searching finds nothing, experts come up empty handed. But it chirps on.

The noise does not go away with time, nor do you grow numb to it.

Why did people think that new family could make up for the family I lost?

After my dad died, all these feelings I had about him were suddenly given back to me, and I didn't know what to do with them. For a while, I thought the solution was to never give those feelings out again. The idea of giving them out, then getting them thrown back at me was too scary.

But then, after a while, I started to give away little pieces again. It wasn't as much as I felt for my dad... it never could be... and they held it differently than my dad did...

I felt lighter.

Then I realized the people who'd been holding a lot of my feelings before started to hold more too. Even though I still hold a lot of feelings about my dad that I could never give to another person...

I finally felt like I'd reached a place where life felt "everyday" again.
