I honestly don't know much about Morpheus, but a friend of mine told me he likes feeding birds. Kinda dig his comic book look tho 👀. Him being the manifestation of dreams + V and his familiar's whole deal... there's some great potential here.

Some Random Things about Visions of V I noticed upon (another) re-read

It's always interesting to find new things you didn't notice before when rereading something… which in this case is Visions of V. 

1. Griffon

Man... this bird. I initially didn't really care for him- yes, he was a funny, loud, and somewhat endearing character, but I didn't give him much thought til now. During this reread, I realized how much of a good friend he was to V. He provided different types of support in various ways. 

Griffon often served as a mediator between V and the other familiars. 

He's also very protective of V, which makes sense because he needs V to stay alive for his own survival. But he is often very showy and loud when he is, as if he wants everyone to know he's helping him (it seems he's secretly proud of helping V). 

He was also V’s emotional support. Griffon was constantly paying attention to V’s feelings.

Especially if V was feeling miserable, Griffon would try to make him feel better.

It's most likely that, at first, Griffon did everything he could to keep V alive just to ensure his survival, but in the end, he truly came to care for him. His last words to V were ones of hope- to enjoy the morning. 

It hits harder knowing later on that Griffon and the other familiars decided to fight Dante instead of returning to Vergil.

(Out of all of the things I expected from DMC, it wasn't feeling bad for a loudmouthed bird. Also the irony of having one of the most supportive people-or bird- in your life be a physical representation of your nightmares...)

2. Nero

Everyone knows that Nero has a heart of gold despite his swearing and attitude. But it's the little details that highlight his personality, specifically how he looks out for others. 

When V doesn't answer him, he tries to get a response. 

He checks in with V when there's awkward silence between the two.

While traveling in the Qlipoth, he thinks about V's condition and worries for him.

He tries to discourage V from going to Urizen. But when he can't, he helps V anyway, even if that means putting his pride to the side (beating Dante at reaching Urizen and proving he's just as capable as him).

This stuck in my mind because at this point, Nero and V had interacted for less than a day (or maybe even a few hours) when V went to Fortuna to get Nero to fight Urizen. But after that failed, Nero went straight back to Fortuna for a month. Then the two cross paths again later, but mostly go their separate ways, only meeting occasionally in the Qlipoth. 

So in total, the two have known each other for around 1 or 2-ish days, and yet Nero is looking out for V. (I think in the game, it's much clearer that Nero doesn't trust V fully, yet here it's shown he was still worried for him) 

3. This is less of an observation, more of a change in thinking. 

Previously, when I looked at this story and thought about Vergil and Dante, I would think: 

"Vergil, stop running! Your brother loves you! You need to go back to him and be his brother again!" 

But after this re-read, my thoughts are this now: 

" Vergil, stop running! Stop being in denial, you idiot! You love your brother, and he's waiting for you! Stop believing that the reality you want isn't possible. IT'S LITERALLY RIGHT THERE. Dante wants his twin back, and you want to be his brother! Go back NOW, YOU IDIOT."

VERGIL, NO.

Vergil, you love your brother.

VERGIL, GO HOME.

GO HOME TO DANTE.

Some parts of Visions of V are hilarious. Apparently, V canonically got the money to pay Dante in Devil May Cry 5 by using his familiars to mug would-be muggers who attacked him. (Because I guess Criminals™ who mug people for no discernible reason except they're Just Bad™ just sort of spawn naturally in a place like Red Grave City, or something. But I digress.)

Imagine if you and your buddies tried to rob this skinny tattooed Adam Driver-looking twink who carries a cane, and he singlehandedly mops the floor with all of you by summoning a nightmare-demon-bird who talks in a passable imitation of Gilbert Gottfried as Iago the Parrot. As you lie there barely conscious and twitching from the injuries and terror, he starts bickering at cross-purposes with the demon-bird about the correct way to eat a burger without spilling the sauces onto himself. He asks you for your input; all you can do is groan about the pain.
