Shocky should have listened.

He shouldn’t have watched that horror movie with Chill. Grillby warned him, but he didn’t listen.

Now he was too scared to sleep.

The clock read past midnight when he finally gave up on sleeping alone. He got up out of bed and snuck out into the dark hallway towards Grillby’s room. The distance between their bedrooms was small, but it felt like a mile. Every creak made him jump in fear and blink back tears. He kept having to stop and listen, to try and figure out if he was alone in the hallway or not. It took more and more courage to keep walking after every stop, and eventually, finally, he made it to Grillby’s door.

He knocked hesitantly and didn’t wait before he opened the door. The room was dark except for where Grillby’s wispy flames illuminated. Shocky felt bad that he was going to wake the monster up, but he was scared.

“Grillby?” He whispered and stepped into the room. He turned around to close the door and winced at its loud creaking. Once it was shut, he turned back around–and practically jumped out of his currents with a scream.

“What’s wrong?” Grillby stood in front of him while he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. “Did Chill do something?”

“N-not exactly.” Shocky did his best to calm down. This was going to suck. “I…I watched the horror movie with Chill.”

“I see,” grillby yanwed. “Come on then.”

Grillby led the way back to bed and crawled in. Shocky followed suit and settled next to him with a grateful smile. It melted into something softer when he found that Grillby had already fallen asleep. So he dared to snuggle closer before he closed his eyes and made up his mind.

No more horror movies.

“Hey, Chill?” A young Shocky called his older brother’s attention. Chill was helping him with his tie for the morning, and he was making it too loose as usual. “When is Uncle Vio coming back?”

Chill visibly stiffened at question and didn’t reply. His frown grew deeper and more pronounced, and Shocky was afraid he was in trouble.

“Listen, Shocky.” Chill spoke when he tied the tie. He moved his hands to Shocky’s shoulders and squeezed them slightly. “Sometimes…sometimes, bad people come into your life. They look like good people and act like good people, but they aren’t.”

Shocky looked at Chill in mild confusion then asked, “But…Uncle Violet was a good person. He helped me, and brought me gifts and stuff.”

He got a sympathetic smile in return. “Maybe he was, but in the end, he wasn’t.”

“But…” Shocky wanted to argue his case more, but Chill had such a sad look in his eyes and it made his words die in his chest. “….So he’s not coming around anymore?”

“No, he won’t.” Chill tried to smile, but Shocky could tell it was empty. He closed his eyes when the ice elemental leaned in and kissed his forehead, and he pulled back with weak grin. “Now, come on, we’ve got work to do.”

“Okay.” Shocky nodded and followed Chill out the door. He didn’t feel good about the talk, but knew that he wasn’t the only one missing Violet.

“Are yousure about it?” Shocky asked with a concerned voice, holding his own hand. Thethought was frightening, but the way the fire elemental smiled reassuringly tohim eased his nerves. “If there is someone I can trust, I know that would beyou.” Grey’s voice was as calm as always, even if Shocky could see how much hishands were trembling on each other.

Theelectric elemental slowly put one of his hands with the palm up towards Grey,and he watched carefully for Grey’s reaction, passing by every single thingthat could happen and how to act to each of them on his head, courtesy ofChillby. He felt his heart accelerating as he watched the fire elementalreaching to hold his hand.

It was agentle warmth, and as much as he was shaking, the hand stayed on place. Shockywatched the hand with a small smile, feeling happy that he was someone Greytrusted enough to touch. But his line of thought got cut short when the hand closedon his and pulled him even closer, feeling the gentle warmth around his body.

He didn’treacted at first, on the list nothing mentioned Grey pulling him on a hug, andas a result he kept looking forward. He felt a hand on the back of his head,and how much feeling it was being poured on the act, how tight it was the hug.It almost felt like… “Thank you.” Grey murmured, with a shaky voice, yet thesmile and happiness on him was audible, and Shocky immediately hugged him back.He couldn’t help the tears building up on his eyes if he wanted.

Thisdefinitely felt like family.
