Bleeding Sun

Absolutely cool commission for @grimae of character Zenobia; dragon but also the sun. I had great time to work with this, it's something that cannot be scanned well as I used gold leaf (not real gold sadly but actual metal) for the face and claws, other shiny golden parts are golden Coliro Pearlcolors, the rest is a mix of ink, liner pens, colored pencils, copic markes, Posca markers, some happy accidents and hard work. Gold leaf gives a nice surreal effect for the face that is there but kinda hard to see sometimes, as it was the sun as well.

was literally foaming at the mouth waiting for it to arrive. beautiful art and the story had me so invested!!!!! probably one of my favorite art books in my little collection.

it now sits on my shelf, looking very mysterious.

"thinking too much into paintings old artists did for fun" goes hand in hand with the notion that art isn't proper and hard work. people think we can just squeeze pictures out of our noses, as if motion, composition, colours, shapes and values have no meaning at all yet we spend decades to learn them right. most of the time, yes, every single brush stoke has a meaning and it's place and time.

Not much to add to this, really. Art is hard work and takes a lot of knowledge and skill, skill that takes years to develop. In the past painters would call themselves ‘craftsmen’ rather than ‘artists’ because that’s what they saw it as - a craft.

I know we like to say ‘art is free do what you want’, but when it comes to imaginative realism nothing could be further from the truth.
