After Patton had gently ushered Thomas back against his part of the wall, rubbing comforting circles into his back to help release the tension and anxiety from the other, he then turned to Remus who was still teared up from the pain. Patton walked closer, again with the heat resistant glove on his hand to hold the metal poker. As he lay the instrument on the ground, he stripped the glove off and placed it near Remus, giving him a chance to recover before making his decision. By the time his tears had cleared, he finally looked up at his captor with puffy, wet eyes before they trailed down and landed on the objects in front of him, the branding iron glowing a dangerous sun yellow and gleaming in the dimly lit room.

“Remus, are you ready to make your decision?”

Came the single question from the once-parental figure, to which was soon responded with a nod from the green side. He reached for the glove and shot Roman a glance, though his emotions were unidentifiable from a distance. Remus’ arm stretched taught the moment he moved it from where he had been holding the mess of burnt skin, fried flesh and seared muscle close to his chest protectively. A loud whimper bounced off the walls of the room and Patton furrowed his eyebrows in worry, kneeling down next to Remus to try and inspect him but the other side brushed off his efforts, ignoring his existence. He could barely speak. 

“I ch-” His voice broke out in a small suppressed hiss of pain.

“I choose to b-brand Roman.”

As he was finally able to put on the glove, he picked up the metal poker and stood up, leaving Patton to kneel neck to where he once was. Looking on at him with a neutral or hard to read expression as the Dark side began to approach his twin, who began to scramble back to try and escape his injured brother’s wrath. The lock on his ankle forbade him though, the spikes that lined the interior beginning to penetrate Roman’s flesh around his ankle with a sickening snap of the skin retracting back up from having the pressure slice through him like he was just paper. To accompany this was a fresher noise, that of liquid popping, the crimson already beginning to stain his already bruised skin and leak into the white cloth of his pants mercilessly. 

“H-Hey Remus! Brother! Need we not resolve to this of all things, how about we just put the iron down and we can just talk this through and see what else we can d-”

Roman wasn’t able to finish his plea to his sibling before Remus all but pounced on him, merely missing hitting his face with the iron by just an inch. It got so close that Roman, himself, could feel it singe a string of hair so close to his nose, he could have felt the burn on the peak of it. “Get off of me, you fiend!” The red side snapped with a squeak as he was momentarily winded by the strong pressure on his chest. Remus clawed at this brother’s left arm, lifting it, whilst keeping the other pinned with his knee to the floor heavily. 

Another pathetic squirm came from Roman as Remus pulled down his sleeve, bringing the Iron up in the hand that wasn’t holding Roman…

“You Mons-!!” Roman was cut off by himself this time, a high pitched pained yell leaving the prince as Remus all but shoved it into his sibling’s forearm, the loud hiss of the burning skin against the metal filling the room along with Roman’s pained groans as Remus pushed harder and harder against the skin. The sizzling made everyone grimace as, once again, the room filled with the burning scent of another person falling victim to their ‘experiment’.

Feeling his skin beginning to clung steadily to the iron, Roman began to squirm again in his grips, kicking out his feet in a useless attempt to get Remus off of him, to escape. Neither of the pair had realised Patton was counting until Remus pulled back the hot metal, a few strings of unidentifiable burnt muscle matter, melted flesh and sweet crimson bridging the gap between the arm and the rod. 

Roman thrust the Other from off of him with a groan, biting back the urge to cry at the pain, betrayal of trust and emotional hurt he felt from the ordeal. He looked back to Patton, who was very deeply concerned for Roman, but due to test conditions, couldn’t help him. Instead, he took the glove and iron from Remus and instead, laid them in front of Roman, waiting for him to recover from the new shape pressed permanently into his forearm. The floor in front of Roman was a mess, covered in chunks of skin that had flaked off and soaked themselves in blood and the pool that surrounded them.

“Roman, are you ready to make your decision?”

Hey Pat? How is branding yourself or the person next to them showing kindness? Also how long has the iron been heating for?

“As for the branding iron, a good while! You have to be careful with these things, so I’ve taken all precautions!”

Logan looked from Janus up to Patton as he asked the question to the logical side, his indigo pupils locking with Patton’s own mismatched ones, unable to pick the other apart like usual. Feeling unnerved yet bold from what he had been playing witness to this entire time, he looked over to Virgil. The anxious side was quivering and chittering to themselves as they eyed the branding iron and glove at Logan’s feet. Logan looked away from them, looking to Roman and Janus instead, who looked back at him silently. They were waiting for his decision.

The logical side thought for a moment, before lifting his head to Patton, who looked down at him expectantly.

“I choose to brand Virgil.”

 Came the bland response. For just a brief moment, Logan could have sworn he felt a wave of pity and sadness roll from the other as he looked between the two before nodding at Logan to go ahead. Logan reached for the glove to pick up the rod, got up and turned to his purple friend, who scurried backwards against the wall. Logan took one step forward before his eyes flitted to Patton, who was looking away.

Patton wasn’t too far from the pair, so as Logan whipped around to the other, he would only need to take a few steps towards the other and he would be within hitting distance. Logan rushed forward, grappling the very bottom of the cooling branding iron to swing full force at the moral side. As he yanked on the chain from the sudden movement, though, it’s spikes curled in Logan's flesh mercilessly and yanked him back, ripping deep lines around his ankle bones down to the beginning of his foot.

As a pained yelp arose from Logan, along with the loud clatter of the metal poker skidding across the floor with a few taps, a new noise filled the room. At first, it just sounded like a spark of pure electricity, clicking with energy before it crackled loudly and lit the room alive with light as the bolts caused everyone to go momentarily blind. Yells of protest arose from the captives as they watched the sparks dance around that corner of the room. The smell of crisp flesh filled the chamber, burning in everyone’s nostrils like a poisonous gas. 

Somebody had been shocked and before they knew it, the group heard the loud thud of a body hitting the floor before the light welled away into darkness again.

Slowly, the room buzzed back to life, with people recovered from the shock of Logan’s actions and the sparks. Patton was visibly frozen, looking off into the corner of the room with shaky eyes.

Everybody came to, and when Janus finally cracked open one of their eyes, their stomach twirled in circles and they felt sick to the core. Their eyes landed of the corpse of someone who they would’ve once called their friend, now their body there and lifeless as if resting peaceful, was it not for the soft burns and rising bruises that coaxed their body.

A loud cry came from that part of the room that split the air as it carried tears in it’s tone.

“VIRGIL!”

Logan cried out, ignoring the metal that was now inside of his leg, trying to scamper the corpse of his departed friend, his eyes were flooded with tear and his cheeks carried a red tint. He wanted to move toward them, but was held back by the chain around his ankle.

“VIRGIL! Virgil! I’m so sorry I wasn’t thinking rationally I-I-” The logical side wailed into the room, the sound bouncing off the walls. The now slightly cooled rod lay just behind Patton’s feet, who went go to retrieve it gloveless, and held it out to the mourning Logan, who glared back up at him with hatred.

“You still have to brand them, Logan. That’s the rules.”

“Go to hell.” 

Logan groaned, but took the rod anyways, leaving Patton to look like a kicked puppy at his reply. He moved forwards toward the corpse of their friend and, quickly, placed the hot iron on the flesh of the departed person. No noise came, except for the soft sizzling of the skin and the pressed noised from the iron. Everybody was silent.

y’know patton, id say logan was acting with kindness bc he was trying to keep from having to brand both virgil and himself. cause, you know, virgil’s scared of fire. and you made him brand virgil’s dead body. honestly that seems like the most immoral thing that’s happened in that room
