What's the best Rune Factory game to start for a newcomer?
Rune Factory 4 Special, for sure. I haven't yet played RF1 or 2, but from the rest, RF4S offers the most in terms of content, both during the main story and post game, as well as being the most user friendly with qol upgrades from previous games. The characters are also fantastic and fun with a nice story. Best thing too is because of how the games are set up, while they all happen in the same universe around similar times, you don't have to play previous games to understand the game.
The only thing about it is that gay marriage is only a feature in RF5 so there's only straight pairs for your protag, but there are work arounds in game to change your portrait to the opposite protag or mod in gay marriage on Steam's version if wanted.
Definitely would say to start with RF4S then try out RF3S or RF5 after if you enjoy it and want to try out others.

wish I had someone to stop me from buying fighting games, especially on the Switch. Like I don't even really like playing against other people. I just get good enough to play through whatever campaign or arcade mode a few times and see all the specials.

I wish I got Skylanders Imaginators for the Switch when it was still at MSRP. Getting it secondhand is not worth $100+
