SOTD - Wiley - “Wickedest MC Alive”
Grime is a UK rap style heavily influenced by dance music, Caribbean sounds and even punk and rock. Wiley is one of the genre’s godfathers and released this snarling, boastful track as part of an 8-songs-in-8-weeks release program. It’s aces.
Because it intersects with the British indie rock I love, it’s easy to see grime as an entry point into the broader hip-hop universe. In particular, I like that the genre seems to grapple with bigger themes than the gangsta imagery that *I perceive* to be prevalent in US hip-hop.
Important caveat: There’s gangsta rap in the US and the UK. I think it’s safe to say that subgenre is more popular in the US, but it’s a mistake to think that’s all that’s out there. I can and should do a better job seeking out and appreciating the diverse voices in American hip-hop. i.e. This white guy needs to be better about seeking out music made by black voices.
Good news is that I’ve been really excited about the new Beats 1 radio station applemusic launched. I think it’s just fantastic and, importantly, is playing plenty of grime and other hip-hop that I like and can get into. Thank you Zane Lowe and Julie Adenuga.
P. S. Don’t even get me started on “Grindie.”
