Salutations to the Eagle’s Crag

The last time I visited Grisedale valley was around three years ago with my Lisabet in the height of summer. We hiked all the way up to Grisedale Tarn from Patterdale, in the middle of the day, in mid-20s heat. The sun kicked my ass that day. Today, the conditions were more favourable (for me), so I enjoyed a valley bottom stroll down the southern side of the dale and back along the northern side. I couldn’t resist this composition of Nethermostcove Beck and its cascades as they tumble down the side of imposing Eagle Crag. A day of moody hill fog and changing light, lovely stuff.

ISO100, ƒ/22, 0.8secs at 14mm (21mm full-frame equiv.) using a slim circular polariser and a soft 3-stop ND grad filter stacked on my Sigma dp0 Quattro. This is a single exposure, edited in Capture One and Photoshop.

Final Light of the Day

Looking back towards the head of Grisedale as the sun finally breaks through the dense hill fog, illuminating the glaciated contours of the valley.

Thought I’d try something a la’al different with this image.

ISO100, ƒ/22, multiple exposures at 14mm (21mm full-frame equiv.) using a soft 3-stop ND grad filter on my Sigma dp0 Quattro. I shot three bracketed exposures at ƒ/22 as the sun light breaking through the fog was so intense, I wanted to be sure to capture the entire light range of the scene. These were processed in Sigma’s Photo Pro, blended as a 32-bit TIFF then edited in Lightroom and Photoshop.
