Finally finished the Diebuster (Gunbuster 2) OVA series on DVD today. I will never not love this opening credits sequence & song...really great J-Pop from the early aughts....(2003-ish). I watched the original Gunbuster movie first then tackled this OVA series and will later try the condensed Diebuster film that retells this same saga at feature length. Apparently the original physical release in Japan contained BOTH films back to back. I would like to eventually watch the original Gunbuster OVAs because the condensed first film does feel a little rushed in its storytelling. It’s your basic story of girls flying giant robots in space fighting seemingly endless waves of space monsters.....the first film/series in particular pays heed to relativistic time dilation associated with near-light-speed travel. The original pair get flung so far away that they aren’t going to be able to return to Earth for another 100,000(?) years. Everyone they know and love will be long dead....and indeed they’re unsure on final approach if anyone is alive at all on Earth. But they are and have been busy continuing the war against the space monsters all this time. When Diebuster wraps up, Noriko & her Oneesama from original Gunbuster make their long awaited return, welcomed by the future generations we’ve seen in action all this time....and we see their arrival from the ground point of view as their ships finally come into view from Earth. Pretty cool way to tie the two stories together. Diebuster (Gunbuster 2)’s main heroine is Nono, the pink haired klutz who winds up having a secret past and a date with destiny. Both Gunbuster & Diebuster are iconic “classic” anime, especially Gunbuster. The over-the-top battle sequences have been referenced in countless other shows ever since.
