Ribes lobbii - Gummy Gooseberry
Frutti di Ribes Uva-spina (Ribes uva-crispa L., Grossulariaceae)
Ribes speciosum
The genus Ribes (in the family Grossulariaceae) includes the plants known as gooseberries and those known as currants (the key difference here is that gooseberries have thorny stems, while currants do not). This one is Ribes speciosum, known as the fuchsia-flowered gooseberry. Note that is is not related to the true fuchsias, just resembling them in having red dangling flowers. R. speciosum is a California native, found from the Bay Area southward along the coast and the Coast Ranges to Southern California and northern Baja California. Its abundant showy red flowers come very early in the year, making it a popular landscaping plant.

Golden gooseberry is a member of the currant and gooseberry family native to California. The yellow flowers turn into yellow to red fruit which are astringent when eaten raw, but can be cooked to improve the flavor and use as jam or other food accessories.
Stink Currant, Ribes bracteosum (Grossulariaceae). I love Ribes, and this is probably my favorite one. I love the smell of their leaves! 🌿 #stinkcurrant #ribesbracteosum #grossulariaceae #plants #botany #plantsofinstagram #plantphotography (at Carnation, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/pnw_botany/p/BxKqp-oFKe2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2idjm46xjd9y

Galls are amazing! These odd phenomena are "an abnormal localized swelling or outgrowth produced by a plant as a result of attack by a parasite. Galls are caused by bacteria, fungi, nematodes, insects, or mites or by a combination of these agents" (botanydictionary.org). Usually, I leave galls alone, but this is the first time I've actually found a buggy within- the few others I've opened up had nothing I could identify inside. These growths are aptly named: in English, gall means "bold, impudent behavior.” I'd say forcing another being to create a comfy home for one definitely counts as gall! Ribes cereum (and other Ribes spp.) are good "habitat" for insects- here in northern AZ, Ribes are early spring blooming shrubs who leaf out before many other species wake for spring. They’re prolific, nutritious options for many insects. I wonder what these buggies do after leaving the gall- do they pollinate the Ribes who "birthed" them?! #Grossulariaceae #ribes #currant #gall #science #ecology #insect #parasite #arizona #ponderosapineforest #nativeplants #botanize #botany #plants #nature #naturephotography #plantstagram (at Scholtz Lake)
