kaz was born to a japanese woman and american soldier nearing the end of WWII, his father had returned to america when he was born so it was just him and his mother for many years. his mother named him Kazuhira as it means peace in japanese. eventually he found his father, after many failed attempts of trying to meet him, he finally gave in. before he went to america, kaz put his mother in a hospital due to her sickly condition and left for america, where he finally met his father - he gave kaz money for school and american citizenship, with the name "Miller". once returning to japan, he found his mother in awful condition, to the point she had forgotten who he was.
"At first I thought she was mad at me. But that wasn’t it, disease had taken her mind… A disease she had gotten while she was young and desperate. She didn’t even know who I was. I said, "Mum, It’s me, Kazuhira." As I spoke, the sound of my own voice rang in my ears. "Kazuhira". The name my mum gave me. It meant "peace" in Japanese. I was Japanese. At least, I was the son of this tiny Japanese woman. It was then, for the first time, that I understood the reason - the emotion - that inspired my mother to give me that name. She’d watched her whole hometown and family go up in flames. Her body and mind were ravished by war… And yet she chose to have a child named "peace", with a man who was once her enemy." -Kaz
once kaz’s mother died and his father killed himself, kaz joined JSDF and there was called Master Miller.
i dont want to accidentally make this a whole biography so im going to quickly say he kept going by Kazuhira Miller all the way through his first meeting with bb, through MSF and all the way until he left diamond dogs.
after diamond dogs, after he found out about venom being a clone, after he found out about big boss’ plan and after he made a deal with ocelot - saying they’d train both of the twins (kaz training solid and ocelot training liquid) so that eventually they’d be strong enough to take down big boss but it also meant that one of them would have to kill the other because they’d be on two sides of the same war. - he joined fox hounds and adopted the name Benedict McDonell Miller, a truly american name. he started training solid snake and became like a father figure to him, at the same time as marrying and having a daughter. he successfully trained solid snake well enough for him to kill big boss, which he did. (not really but im not going into that SHITE this is about kaz) after that, kaz retired and moved to alaska, where he was then killed by ocelot on the 25th of february 2005.
kazuhira also had a wife and daughter. catherine was mentioned in the metal gear 2: solid snake game manual under miller’s biography, she doesnt make an appearance in game but theres a small dialogue that somewhat fits the description of her and kaz. a character called carrie talks to snake on the codec and says her father cant talk because he’s fishing & provides snake with a codec frequency to contact kaz with. catherine is also mentioned in the mgsv game quiz since she was born during bb’s nine year coma, before the take place of mgsv !! for her mother, however, that is a very shaded subject as basically nothing is known about her other than the fact she’s kaz’s wife and they presumably separated in 1999 when catherine was living with kaz in LA - as stated in the mgs4 database. after that is when kaz later moved to alaska with his huskies in 2005, which then obviously he was murdered.
ALSO it is canon that carrie is not biologically kaz’s daughter as he was infertile due to the events in mgsvtpp! AAAND it’s possible but not confirmed that she might have been with kaz at the time of his murder as he and catherine shared custody
