Even if he felt tired after a busy day like the one he had, Jaehyo couldn’t doss. He was lying there for about half an hour staring at the wall, certain that he was the only one in the room that hadn’t fell asleep yet. Taeil’s muteness and the low snoring from Jihoon told him he was most likely the only one awake. He sighed, angry with himself. It was past 1AM.
When he started thinking about turning his laptop on to go on internet, a choky hiccup surprised him. Jaehyo focused his audition to be sure about what he had just listened. Almost as if it was a confirmation, the hiccup went again, this time hacking. It was coming from that room. Jihoon was snoring continuosly, so Jaehyo turned his head to Taeil’s bed. He was sleeping on the single bed under the window. Jaehyo slept down in the bunket, then sat down, putting his legs outside the bed and facing the figure ahead, that was just where Taeil was lying. “Taeil-ah?” He didn’t know what he was expecting, but received nothing in return. Although the window was open, the room was dark. It was a night without stars. Jaehyo tried again, now a bit louder. “Taeil?” A movement in the sheets and Jaehyo had his confirmation that his hyung was awake. And ignoring him. That worried Jaehyo. He stood up and approached slowly the bed in front of him. Taeil was lying on his back, an arm over his face. If he had noticed Jaehyo’s approach, didn’t make an effort to show it. The younger sat on the border of the bed, trying to distinguish something in his hyung’s face through the darkness. He had his arm over his eyes, but it was still possible to see the glow from tears on his cheeks and chin. Jaehyo gulped. "What happened, hyung?” This time he waited patiently. He had his eyes on the man in front of him, a worried expression. He saw when Taeil’s lips trembled before his answer: “Nothing” "What do you mean by nothing?” Jaehyo took one of Taeil’s hands, the one that was resting on his stomach and pressed on his own hand. His heart was small just by seing tears on his face. Hearing his low voice, then, made him feel hopelessly tiny. “Nothing, Jaehyo. Leave me alone” He was used to that kind of treatment. Taeil never answered his oncoming attempts, no matter how hard he tried. But it didn’t discouraged him. He cared ridiculously for that hyung, and he felt a little ashamed for feeling that way for Taeil. With his other group mates, he only had the usual friendship. Taeil was something more, even if Jaehyo was less than a friend to him. “No. Tell me what happened” Jaehyo forced Taeil to let his arm off his face. By the wispy he could see in that dark room, his hyung’s eyes were swollen and shining. He was pitiful. When he got no answer, Jaehyo tried once agan: “Taeil-ah…” Like if it was enough for him, Taeil suddenly sat up on the bed, his face twitching with more tears, and he threw himself on Jaehyo, hugging him in despair. Jaehyo felt hit. He had now Taeil sobbing on his shoulder, and his heart hurt more than it ever had before. It was distressful. He would suffer everything in Taeil’s place, if he could. He couldn’t fully understand his hyung reasons, but he was sure that, whatever it was, he was willing to fix it. He put his arms around Taeil, wrapping in him a hug. He could feel the older slightly shivering, shaken up by the crying, his body cold. Jaehyo felt like he was about to burst into tears too. “Hyung…” “I’m a failure. I can’t handle it anymore” Taeil’s words were interrupted by sobs. He was clinging thigtly on the back of Jaehyo’s pajamas, like if he needed some support to hold onto, the tears falling in the younger boy’s shoulders incessantly. Jaehyo didn’t answer at first. He waited Taeil to cry what was stuck on his throat. He tried somehow to confort him in the hug, one of his hands caressing absently the top of his hyung’s head. When he thought it was ok, he pulled Taeil back enough to look him in the eyes. Then, slowly like a ritual, he held his hyung’s face with one hand, stroking his thumb in Taeil’s cheek, cleaning any trace of tears there. After that, he repeated the movement on the other side, wiping away the tears there too. Taeil wouldn’t face him. He had his eyes down, his breath still heavy. “What makes you think you’re a failure, Taeil? Hum? You’re the most talented person I’ve ever met. You have thousands of fans out there. Look where you’ve managed to be. How can you say you’re a failure?” by that time Taeil had already looked up to him, little sad eyes shining with tears that persisted to roll down. “I’m nothing… Compared to the others” As his tears were falling, Jaehyo was wiping them, again and again, barely conscious that his own eyes were wet. “To me, you’re everything, Lee Taeil. You’re just lagging to see that”. Jaehyo smiled while Taeil laughed weakly. It was damn good to see him open his smile, even if it was slightly… Jaehyo felt his heart loosen in his grip. He still had his hyung’s face on his hands, and he was slowly stop crying. Jihoon’s snoring kept going up the bunket. “Come here” With a shift in his movements, Jaehyo lied down on the edge of the bed and indicated Taeil to lay on the pillow again, beside him. When the hyung did it, the younger settled himself in a way he could hug him, resting his chin on Taeil’s head. Taeil understood and wrapped his arms around Jaehyo, putting his face on the younger’s chest. Comforting, that’s what it was. Jaehyo felt relieved once he didn’t see any tears on Taeil’s face, that was now lying hugging him, his eyes closed, his breath in the normal rhythm again. Jaehyo looked down to watch his hyung’s peaceful face. That was the first time he was able to rest like that, with Taeil in his arms, so close he could feel the warm breath on his skin… “Even if I’m no big deal, or don’t go any further,” Taeil started, his eyes still closed, placed in Jaehyo’s arms “at least I have to remind myself that I have you guys. My second family. Thanks…” Jaehyo closed his eyes too, trying hard to hold his mouth from saying what he wanted to say. What he should’ve said a long ago. What would show Taeil that he was more important than he could even imagine… Instead of that, the younger simply replied: “You’ll go further, be sure. And I’ll help you if you need. I’ll always help you” And for the fist time that night, despite the melancholy now inside Jaehyo’s chest, both felt comfortable, safe. Taeil’s arms around Jaehyo held him thight, the two of them decided to sleep like that. Before he could fall asleep, though, Jaehyo murmured: “I’ll be always here, Taeil…”
