Planted ginger on Saturday! Disclaimer: while this is the third year we’ve grown ginger, we don’t claim to do it the right or best way, so please share any tips! Here’s what we do: I bought these organic rhizomes at @berkeleybowl in January. I looked for the ones that seemed to have the most life in them - perhaps a bulge where they might start growing, avoiding any that looked dried out. Since then they’ve been living in a cooler that wasn’t kept cool (I sort of forgot about them, and perhaps that’s why they started growing!) I took them to the farm, divided them (they are shown here already divided), and placed them as shown in shallow potting soil. I covered them completely with a little potting soil and placed them on our heat mats that stay above 50 degrees at all times. Hopefully they’ll start emerging in a few weeks! Then we will plant them in our high tunnel spaced about 12-18” apart and we’ll lift them around first frost and use the leaves in cooking as well. They don’t seem to get mature enough here for winter storage in order to replant, but perhaps you have a tip for us about that? We eat them all. #ginger #growingginger (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-qhDPUAvyd/?igshid=o4xbo9wg3i0e
