Grumans Deli
I discovered today why I likely can't be a professional food blogger. I'm sure most people don't want "fuck, yes!" written as praise, but it's what I kept thinking as I devoured my food.
One of my good friends emailed me an article on Grumans Deli, and with the rainy day, and my desire for comfort food, today felt like the best day to go for the first time. Having a display case of kosher dills, and rugelach greet me, I knew I was in good hands. I was seated at a booth, and gave the menu a quick glance, just for fun as I already knew it was going to be a matzo ball soup and latke day. I absently checked Twitter while waiting for my food to arrive, but once it arrived, I felt like I had to remind myself to stop and breathe.
My first spoonful of soup was delightful, and I'm sure it put a goofy grin on my face. Taking in the ambiance, I enjoyed the old photos on the walls, it felt like being among family - even if I'm only a halfbreed (yes, that's a nod to Cher's song). As I ate my food, alternating between both dishes, I kept thinking; "fuck, yes!" and I sounded just like Napoleon saying "heck, yes!" I was that happy to be there.
Brisket is available on Fridays, and you have to either get there early, or call ahead to reserve some, as it sells quickly. I'll plan my return visit accordingly.
My only complaint is the lack of blintzes on the menu, and that they need to offer a full variety of rugelach, i.e. chocolate, and cinnamon/walnut, which I prefer to the apricot they carry. My server didn't even know those flavors existed.
By the time I left, I was scheming a way to get them to launch a food truck. I just barely managed to leave without ordering more food for later.
