our playwriting teacher is none of the above she is definitely not a homophobe, racist, or sexist
Dear anon. If you actually go to my school and have been in her class, I ask you to reconsider. Everything that I listed in that post is VERY subtle. If she were overt about it, she'd be fired. Keep in mind that she was raised in a different time. Hell, even I sometimes struggle with super-progressive ideas on society /just because of the way I was raised/. She grew up white, straight, and privileged in the '50s, so naturally all those beliefs will be ingrained in her. Throughout the two years that I've been in her class, I've seen her make "they all look the same to me" jokes about POC in our class, single out queer students and prohibit them for reading certain roles because of their orientation, and, yesterday, she called me and my best friend out for "touching each other inappropriately" when I had my arm around the girl's shoulders. When there is a heterosexual couple in our class who constantly cuddles, she never calls them out on it. Not once. Across the room, three girls were literally asleep in class and yet she called US out when I had MY ARM AROUND HER SHOULDERS. Time and time again, she has expressed very faint prejudices against the things said friend and I write (we both write a lot of queer-themed scenes, and our analyses of plays we read feature very modern, liberal points of view). She tells us our opinions are wrong and constantly marks us down on our scenes. And as to sexism-- well. Every play we've ever read in her class is, at its core, about men. Even the one we just read (and if you are in her class, nonnie, you'll know which one), which is CLEARLY driven by the women in the play-- she told us that one of the only male characters in it is the absolute core of the play and it's all about him. It is not. And don't try to tell me there aren't plays all about women. Theatre is, unfortunately, not a very egalitarian business-- because many men still see participating in the arts as "gay"-- so SO many plays are written just about women. We could have read those. So yeah. To recap: it's not her fault she can't overcome her upbringing. She could just try a little harder to be accepting in her classes. Hope this cleared things up, nonnie! Come off greyface if you'd like to discuss this more. (◡‿◡✿)
