“State of Nature”

Here’s the story (or The Rib):

A long time ago many humans believed there was a garden of paradise far away and that a single rib was taken from a man to create a woman. It was said that this woman was to be his companion. Somewhere else, a future of non-humans, indifferent to this story, took to the water, ground and air.

A group of paintings and video, together entitled “The Rib”, originated during a time 4 years ago somewhere in the far west permian desert. There, I came upon a small pond nestled in an ancient canyon. I spent many days peering through a telephoto lens in search of an endemic crayfish species. I saw tiny lifeforms shedding vortices on the water's surface, I heard singing voices in the trees and invisible rattlers on the ground. About this pond, then – as a player in this story, it becomes the site of our primeval muck, a world of multivalent origins and collapsed infinities. All things were existing in a world of flatlands without names or language, their lives tiny little circles, over and over and over. Some never left the thin line above or below the surface of the water and others were able to defy gravity, fly toward the zenith as they wish.

Well, I learned a lot there at the pond. An arc which bends far enough becomes a circle, and one short enough appears straight. Time is manipulated to emphasize the shallow focus of human perception. Think what a twitching blink of an insect eye our human presence in the world is!

I studied the minerals and rock beds closely and dreamt of an animal disguise with an electronic voice. I learn through painting, so I made 7 paintings of chosen birds in hopes to know more about them and become a passive watcher of things too. Composed of 7 segments, a human-size aquatic-air dummy- suit was planned to perhaps better articulate the physical movements of underwater creatures. Her internal organs painted and removed.

I left the pond and returned to Queens...from the mythology of origins (a garden of paradise) to techno-utopian deliverance (a post-biological subject), the whole schmear comes and goes in, like, a long weekend. In the end, it's really quite an open question whether a crayfish has a mind or not.

Featuring artifacts from Indiana’s prehistory alongside visual art that documents biodiversity in Indiana, "State of Nature: Picturing Indiana Biodiversity” will foster awareness of ecological developments, climate change impacts on everyday life, and Hoosiers’ immediate natural surroundings upon debut in Fall 2020.

“Fossil Matrix” 2020 is on hold!   

These drawings will be assembled and reworked in real-time inside a room within a room within a building to form a new site-specific installation I once called Isolation Box, a title that I’m now rethinking.

For this exhibition “State of Nature” curated by Betsy Stirratt, contemporary artworks and artifacts will be shown together in response to scientific research projects at IU that connect deep time and prehistory to biodiversity. Specific works will consider chance occurrences and certain consequences recorded in surrounding environments.

The show is scheduled to travel to the Indiana State Museum in 2021.

As part of the project, I was looking forward to working alongside evolutionary biologists at Indiana University and digging into the paleontology collection with a site visit to the limestone quarries in May 2020. But of course, the visit has been suspended.

  This contemporary art exhibition features paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, wearable art, metalwork, sculpture, fiber art, and video installations by a mix of local, national, and international artists. The artworks explore themes related to sex, gender, eroticism, reproduction, sexuality, romantic relationships, the politics of sex and gender, and the human figure. The jurors for the 2013 competition were Nan Brewer, Lucienne M. Glaubinger Curator of Works on Paper at the Indiana University Art Museum, Betsy Stirratt, Director of the Grunwald Gallery, and Catherine Johnson-Roehr, Curator of Art, Artifacts and Photographs at The Kinsey Institute.

The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show premiered in 2006 at the Kinsey Institute Gallery. For the first two years, the emphasis was on erotic art, but beginning in 2008, the parameters of the competition were expanded to include artworks addressing gender issues, sexuality, reproduction, sexual politics, romantic relationships, and the human figure. In 2009, the exhibition, having outgrown the space available in Morrison Hall, was moved to the Indiana University School of Fine Arts Gallery (now known as the Grunwald Gallery of Art).
