From birth, Gwen was a daddy's girl, through and through. Captain of the NYPD, George Stacy worked hard to provide a nice and stable home-life for his wife and four kids, Gwen being the only girl and the oldest of the bunch. In high school, she strived to prove that she was not only a pretty face, but one of the brightest minds in her class. During her Junior year, she began to notice the somewhat reclusive Peter Parker, and he showed an interest in her back. Working for the pharmaceutical company, Oscorp, Gwen was unaware of the secret agenda her employer's were working on, until Peter Parker showed up and brought Oscorp's dirty laundry into the light. After weeks of sightings of the masked would be-vigilante, Peter confessed to Gwen that he was Spider-Man. Growing ever closer, she worried when he began to track down the lizard creature that had begun tormenting the city, who happened to be none other than Doctor Curt Conners, a colleague of Peter's father and Gwen's supervisor at Oscorp. After realizing Spider-Man's identity, Conners attacked the high school in an attempt to stop Peter from interfering with his plans. Gwen popped up during the fight to offer assistance, causing Conners to flee.

Knowing Conners planned to infect the city with his lizard serum, Peter instructed Gwen to go to Oscorp to synthesize a antidote for the serum, while he attempted to stall Conners. Minutes later however, Peter realized that Conners was headed to Oscorp himself, and hurried to stop him. On the way, Peter was stopped by Captain Stacy, who upon learning his true identity, and that Gwen was in danger, let him go. Meanwhile, Gwen evacuated Oscorp, knowing that Conners would kill anyone in his way, but stayed behind herself to finish the antidote. Gwen makes it out of the building with the antidote, and give it to her father to give to Peter. Captain Stacy arrived in the nick of time to help Peter stop Conners and disperse the antidote, but was fatally wounded in the process. With his last breath, George made Peter promise to stay away from Gwen, knowing that them being together would only lead to Gwen being in danger.

Peter kept his word and broke it off with Gwen, leaving her hurt and confused for months. It wasn't until after graduation when Peter came to her and told her of the happenings in D.C. that they broke the silence. She agreed to go with them, but their relationship was still stiff and it was unsure whether they would be able to fix things, but it was clear they were both willing to try. Gwen asked her friend Mary Jane to tag along, and even invited the fourth member of their gang, Harry Osborn.
