Xiamen, Fujian 福建厦门
This was probably one of the most meaningful trips I’ve ever taken in my life. I will share the photos from this trip probably over a few photo series.
My late great-grandfather originally came from Fujian, China, but most of my relatives have since dispersed to many places. I myself was born in Indonesia and am now residing in Singapore. My grandfather really wanted me to go on this trip because he really wanted to show me where we came from – our ancestral homeland – and at the same time “bring” my great-grandfather back home (basically relocating his spirit tablet to this temple in Xiamen), which was his wish before he died.
This temple was located on a mountain and it was beautiful, although I really can’t remember its name.
There, we reunited with our relatives from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Xiamen, many of whom haven’t seen each other for years. After the ceremonial processes, we caught up over tea, even if years of living overseas meant that we had a slight language barrier with each other after adopting the respective local languages.
More photo series to come.
