A Shared Dream               

Peppy Hare liked to get ready for bed before he watched the 10 o'clock news on the Great Fox. That meant changing into his nightgown. Normally Fox McCloud would be alert on the couch, eating a big bowl of ice cream and doing his planning for the next day. Instead, his back was turned and his body was slumped.

“Fox?” Peppy asked. The reddened face and the downward eyes told Peppy what he needed to know. “Why don’t you just go to bed? You can stay with me,” he said. Ever since James McCloud vanished into thin air, Fox slept in the same bed as Peppy, his father’s best friend, each anniversary of the unfortunate event. The rabbit knew the routine; Fox would change into his usual bathrobe and the two would snuggle together that night. Fox would feel better the next day and would get back to work. Fox nodded and, after some more cajoling from the rabbit, got up from the couch.

Peppy decided to get a swig of water, but Fox was still there when he got back to the TV area.

“Lets go to bed,” Peppy said. He lead Fox by his hand and walked him to the bedroom. After his thirst was quenched, he headed to his bedroom, which appeared like a library, books everywhere, neatly arranged. Pictures of his late wife and daughter decorated the walls.

“Fox?” He was sitting in a chair by the bed, eyes down, blushing, silent. Fox was still wearing his green T-shirt and blue denim pants, clearly not his usual nightwear.

“Maybe you should be more comfortable. I don’t think it feels good wearing jeans to bed,” Peppy said as he pulled the cover of the bed down. “Why don’t you get your bathrobe?” Fox didn’t say anything. “Here, why don’t I get you in bed?” Peppy helped Fox out of the chair and had him lay down on the bed, hands to the side.

“Why don’t…. can I make you comfortable?” asked the rabbit. Fox uncrossed his legs. Peppy walked up to the bed and saw Fox lying still. Peppy put his hands on Fox’s belt and paused. Fox stood still and looked Peppy in the eye, so Peppy removed his pants. The rabbit did this slowly, gently, with care.

The leader of Star Fox, normally a take charge type, was wanting a night where he could be helpless, where he didn’t have to be the leader.

Fox, now in just in the t-shirt and a cheap pair of white briefs, started spilling his guts about how he always dreams about his dad, and every morning realizes he’s not there and not anywhere. How he imagines the same thing happening to himself, no longer existing, not being able to protect his loved ones. Peppy sat on the bed and asked him how long he had those dreams. Turns out they began when James vanished. The rabbit laid down next to the Fox, who raised his arms. Peppy knew what that meant, and so he pulled up Fox’s t-shirt with the same gentleness.

“You mind if I get more comfortable?” the rabbit asked. Fox nodded. Peppy slowly unbuttoned his own nighty, slipped out of it, and embraced his teammate, hugging him from behind, putting one hand non his chest and the other on his bellybutton. He began share his own dreams, how he was afraid of his daughter being targeted by assassins, how he missed Vivian’s cooking, how Pigma taunts him in his dreams.

It was, just them, undressed, hugging, sharing their fears and confessions.

“Can we do this more often?” Fox asked.

“That would be splendid,” said Peppy.

They fell asleep, facing each other in their arms.
