drawing some yule lads
The Yule Lads are giant trolls from Icelandic folklore. The Yule Lads are depicted as long bearded old trolls who are known for their pranks and are the thirteen sons of Grýla and her husband, Leppalúði. Each of the Yule Lads specializes in their own specific prank. Stekkjarstaur means “Sheep-Cote Clod” and he has peg legs and harasses sheep and he comes on December 12th and stays till December 25th. Giljagaur means “Gully Gawk” and he hides in gullies and waits for an opportunity to steal cows milk and he comes on December 13th and leaves December 26th. Stúfur means “Stubby” and he is the shortest of the thirteenth children and he steals pans and eats the crust left on them and he comes December 14th and leaves December 27th. Þvörusleikir means “ Spoon-Licker” and he sneaks into houses and licks spoons and he is very thin due to not eating properly and he comes on December 15th and leaves on December 28th. Pottaskefill means “Pot-Scraper” and he steals leftover food from pots and he comes on December 16th and leaves on 29th. Askasleikir means “Bowl-Licker” and he hides under people’s beds and steals their bowls and he comes on December 17th and leaves December 30th. Hurðaskellir means “Door-Slammer” and he slams people’s doors and wakes them up at night and he comes on December 18th and leaves on December 31st. Skyrgámur means “Skyr-Gobbler” and he steals skyr which is a type of Icelandic cheese with the consistency of yogurt and he comes on December 19th and he leaves January 1st. Bjúgnakrækir means “Sausage-Swiper” and he hides in the rafters and steals sausages and he comes on December 20th and leaves January 2nd. Gluggagægir means “Window-Peeper” and he peeks in people’s windows and looks for stuff to steal and he comes on December 21st and leaves on January 3rd.Gáttaþefur means “Doorway-Sniffer” and he has a very good sense of smell and he sniffs out laufabrauð which is a type of Icelandic bread and he comes out on December 22nd and leaves on January 4th. Ketkrókur means “ Meat-Hook” and he uses a hook to steal meat from people and he comes out on December 23rd and he leaves on January 5th. Kertasníkir means “Candle-Stealer” and he steals candles and eats the ones made out of animal fat and he comes on December 24th and leaves on January 6th.
This year I was commissioned to do the 13 Icelandic santa clauses (yule lads). This is the second one, Gully Gawk. He loves creamy milk so I figured he would like ice-cream.
Icelandic Yule Lad number 2: Giljagaur, 'Gully Gawk'. He hides in gullies, waiting for an opportunity to sneak into the cowshed and steal milk.
Yule Lads, somewhat of a project
So I decided to draw all of the 13 Yule Lads depending on when they came to town. So far, 3 have arrived and I stayed up for about 5 hours more then I should trying to draw those three....but at least I have drawn 4 of them so it's good.
I also drew them they way I picture them to look like, for example:
This is how I pictured Gully Gawk or Giljagaur in Icelandic. I just don't see them with long white beards mainly because they are trolls.
I ask here. Should I continue drawing all 13 Yule Lads?
