Please, can we talk about gulper eels? You mentioned them a few days ago and I'd love to hear your observations on them.

Unlike the barreleye and the blobfish, this is more a behavioral thing than an anatomical thing.

There's a popular image of Eurypharynx pelecanoides, known as the pelican eel, gulper eel, or pelican gulper eel depending on who you ask and how pedantic they are, that makes them a sort of deep sea monster with a cavernous mouth.

Fair, I guess.

But nothing prepared us for what they do while alive underwater - something which we didn't capture on film until 2018.

They inflate their mouths like balloons.

How ridiculously adorable is that?

What's the freakiest, most Lovecraftian sea creature you know of?

For me, it's siphonophores (I know, they're a hivemind of individual creatures but still)

siphonophores are truly lovecraftian and i love them

i think also the gulper eel is quite scary considering their literally unhinged jaw

also personally the lionsmane jelly terrifies me as well as the box jelly becaus e of their e y e s ?????

@absolutely terrified anon: same. my biggest nightmare were those fish that are like a huge mouth followed immediately by a snakey tail (just imaging them kept me from stepping down from my bed, because what if there were deep water FISH underneath it?!!) and now this tumblr is my main source of life meaning

Gulper Eels

Its enormous mouth is much larger than the eel's body. The mouth is loosely hinged, and can be opened wide enough to swallow an animal much larger than itself. The hapless fish is then deposited into a pouch-like lower jaw, which resembles that of a pelican. In fact, this eel is sometimes referred to as the pelican eel. The gulper's stomach can also stretch to accommodate its large meals. This giant mouth gives the eel its other common name of umbrella mouth gulper.

Fish jaw appreciation post

Look at this Slingjaw Wrasse. Extended his weird mouth right into my heart is what he did.

Gulper eels use their jaws to catch prey that's bigger than they are, unintentionally getting themselves stuck in a look that can only be described as "mood."
