PSA for CA gun owners and Gunmageddon
Iâm sure we are all aware of Gunmageddon at this point, and the scramble is on to buy parts to make our semi autos and ghost guns featureless to avoid that confounded registry. No detachable mags, no flash suppressor, no pistol grip of any sort, no folding or telescoping stock⊠blah, blah, ad nauseam. Weâve all been doing our research, right?
So get a grip wrap, mount a compensator, get a fixed stock, and you can even get your mag release back. Easy, right? Well, letâs slow down a bit. Title 11, Div. 5, Ch. 39, Item 5469 defines several items in the evil feature list found at CA Penal Code 12276.5, and I want to direct everyoneâs attention to item B, flash suppressors.
âFlash suppressorâ means any device designed, intended, or that functions to perceptibly reduce or redirect muzzle flash from the shooterâs field of vision.â
Re-read that last bit again. â(It) functions to⊠redirect muzzle flash away from the shooterâs field of vision.â Look at your average compensator, the Lantac Dragon, the Miculek Comp, the Seekins AR ATC, SureFire ProComp, and the list goes on and on. The slots all divert gases, and thus the muzzle flash, away from the line of sight down the barrel. The law doesnât care about reduction of flash, but about the diversion of the flash.
As far as I can tell, the only compensators that wouldnât fall under this definition is an AK slant brake, and the 1921 Thompson brake.
Go careful, CA gun owners. I know chances of getting caught are slim, but I, for one, refuse to risk a decade in jail because âitâs marketed as a compensator, not a flash hider!â didnât impress the judge.
