The bang resonated loud and close, reverberating through bone and ringing in his ears so sharply he hardly heard the subsequent crumple of a body collapsing to the ground. He had stumbled away, missing the shot itself and by the time he righted himself and looked back Trixie’s shirt was already soaked with a deep red-black ooze. He hadn’t seen it coming, far too focused on the threat standing in front rather than the stupidity of those a little closer. Idiot, idiot. How could he have let this happen?
Shallow breathing brought him back to the present. He looked at Trixie, blood still pulsing from the hole burred into her, too much to see the exact source. His knees cracked against the pavement as he fell by her side without so much as a moments deliberation. The fiend was forgotten. He could run but he would never be able to hide, not now, not with the devil prepared to hunt them to the ends of the earth. Right now, Trixie needed him.
Lucifer gathered her into his arms, a hand roaming for the source, finding it and pressing hard. It took a while for him to realise he’d been running his mouth, a litany of reassurances and pleading pouring out. “C’mon, Trixie, stay with me, stay with me. Not like this, c’mon, keep your eyes open, look at me.”
He couldn’t think, all he could feel was the oily slick of his hands and clothes slowly being soaked with blood, every heart beat one closer to Trixie never opening her eyes again and it was his fault, his inaction that lead them there. What would the detective do? What would Chloe do? He fumbled for his phone, still cradling Trixie in one arm dialling the only person who would know-- the woman herself.
