Massu was glad the new guy was considerably younger and very shy so he quickly got bossy with him. Eliza, however, is quite a badass and while he tried to show he's close to her, she kind of rejected him. What's worse, said she had more in common with Mahiro, since they were the same age (25) and shared many interests. Which only made Massu jealous and act mean to him. Things weren't going too well for Massu but in the end, he got #1 missing the mark by just 100 yen. This season might be quite interesting.

2021.12.30 ぐるぐるナインティナイン Part 1

So here's the deal. This was the last episode of the year that lasted 3 hours, sans CMs. This is the one where they eliminate people. The situation for Massu wasn't looking good. He was at the bottom of the list having payed over $100k (roughly), which I think was a record. BUT this is a game show so it wouldn't be interesting to watch if it was already decided. So what they did was set the sum of meal at $400. Also, it could be 1-3 out of 6 people, which was only revealed at the very end. So initially the cast was split into two teams, those 3 who were "safe" and 3 who were in "peril". However, that was virtually meaningless because everyone in the cast apart from Yabe-san were at risk of being kicked off the show. Of course, it was about chances and Massu's chances were bad. The only way for him to remain on the show was to get at #1.

The show was filled with interviews of viewers and staff about who they want to stay and guest star appearances. Massu got a message from his NEWS members who cheered him. Shige said that quite frankly, though Massu's been on the show for 2 years now he's still not good at it so he needs more time. What a supportive burn. Anyway, they ate, played a game and had some fun. At the end, everyone made final bets. They were then told what the most expensive dish was and they had a chance to make final adjustments. Massu who often underordered decided to add all the desserts.

At the end, Hatori-san used a wheel that determined how many people would be eliminated, 1 to 3 that is. He threw the dart but the results were not shown, but saved for the very end. Finally, it was time for the results but the pre-recorded part ended here.

Part 2

2021.12.30 ぐるぐるナインティナイン Part 2

This part of the show was live and took place about a month after the pre-recorded part. Massu apparently had work so he came to the show a little late. They actually played a really stupid game and he came just after they finished and before the results announcement, which made everyone grumble at the unfairness. They used a cutout of him so now there were two Massus. Anyway, the rest of the show was slowly revealing who scored how much. Major spoilers ahead so just in case gonna put the rest under cut.

One by one, Hatori-san revealed the placements. There were 8 all in all and they skipped #1 on purpose starting with two. And every time Massu prayed that his name wouldn't be called. They really stretched it, analyzing what might happen next at each stage. So names kept being called but Massu kept sitting there. Finally, it came to the 8th and 1st places and it was just Massu and the new girl left. They released the drone. After a few agonizing minutes, the drone landed on the girl's table. Which meant a miracle happened and Massu managed to successfully secure #1 and stay for the next season! He was speechless. But this wasn't it. Turned out two people had to be eliminated so Matsushita was also on the list.

Happy Massu gets to stay but this show left me with mixed feelings. Honestly, if it was me, I'd be so pissed. The girl was at #2! She was convinced she was safe. But somehow all the old dudes remained and the new kids were kicked out. It really didn't feel right. But oh well, it was a good show and hopefully the newbies are interesting.

2021.11.04 ぐるぐるナインティナイン 1/2 (part 2)

There are just 4 episodes left until the end of season and elimination so every game is crucial. This time the team was joined by Kame, who is Massu's douki, meaning they had auditions at the same time. Which did not really help Massu's reputation. There were some good moments for him when they were asked to dance to a V6 song they did as juniors, which they both handled well. But after that it was a mess. They had a yoga instructor asking them to do difficult poses, which Kame did well and Massu... not so much. Then they played a game for the special meal where they had to jump on orthopedic mats to reach a button. Massu did 2. Kame did 31. But the worse was yet to come.
