Everyone is going back and forth about their favorite cosmonauts, like ‘oh, So-And-So is a cutie’ or ‘What’s-His-Face did such an important thing for science’, but in addition to all the praise, it has me wondering; does anyone have any LEAST FAVORITE cosmonauts? And does anyone absolutely loathe a certain figure in space exploration history? I must know!

I’d say that Wernher von Braun is pretty universally disliked among the space exploration history community… Even though this German scientist engineered the rockets that took the United States to the Moon, he was also a former Nazi! @gusgrissom touches on this issue in her senior thesis; feel free to reach out to her if you’re interested in learning more! 

I wouldn’t say that I have any least favorite cosmonauts. Of the first cosmonaut corps, the people who are last on my list of favorites are Bykovsky, Nikolayev and Popovich, just because I like the other cosmonauts better/find other cosmonauts’ personalities more endearing. But they all are amazing heroes and great people!

July’s Astronaut of the Month is Gus Grissom. A WWII and Korean War vet, he loved flying and fought hard to be included in the original Mercury 7. In fact, he was one of only two astronauts who would participate in Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, going successfully to space twice before his final Apollo mission. Tragically, it was as commander of the Apollo 1 mission that he, along with his team, would die of an accidental fire during training.
