Big News & A Favor || Gusss
Grant: had practically been trampled by Smorgs when he opened the door to the house, and he hoped that the dog would calm down before they reached Darren's place. He grabbed everything he had to get and Smorgs' leash before locking the door and loading the dog into the car. It didn't take him long to get to Darren's and it made him smile to know he was able to spend time with is best friend again. Grabbing something from the bag he had packed for Ness, he slipped it into his pocket and opened the door for Smorgs to jump out. Grant pressed the doorbell and waited for Darren to buzz him in.
Darren: slightly jumped when he heard doorbell ring. "Wow. That was quick." Darren said to himself, as he made his way over to his high tech buzzer. It was a complicated little thing and Darren must have stood there for five minutes trying to figure out how to ring someone in. He didn't have many visitors, so he rarely used it. After finally figuring it out, he rang Grant in before running over to his front door and opening it. "Grant," he called out, excited.
Grant: grinned, "Jeez buddy, take your time," he teased before opening his arms for a hug from his best friend. "Darren!" He pulled on Smorgs' leash to make the dog come back. "Sorry," he apologized, "Vanessa's elephant hasn't seen other people for a while." He smiled at his friend, "Do you want to hear my news first, or do you just want to talk about what's going on?" It worried Grant to hear that Darren was troubled. He knew that his friend had had a problem with alcohol, but he thought that it was all behind him.
Darren: laughed, pulling back from the hug before letting Grant and Smorgs in. "It's totally fine, dude. Take a seat, get comfortable," he said, plopping down on the couch. "Let's hear about this news first. We can talk about me later." Darren knew the news would be good, but he couldn't help but feel anxious about it anyway.
Grant: chuckled and sat down in an armchair, sighing as Smorgs flopped onto the ground by his feet. He looked over at Darren and laughed, "Don't look so stressed, dude! It's all good I promise." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small ring box, tossing it to Darren. "I asked Vanessa to marry me when she was in labor with Daisy." He grinned, "I think she was kind of shocked by my timing, but she said yes. Naturally I didn't have the ring with me at the time, but that's it." He had been very particular about getting the perfect ring, and had had to ask his sister for help but he had decided on one in the end. And had so far managed to keep it a secret from Vanessa.
Darren: opened the box and examined the ring. It was beautiful and looked exactly like something Vanessa would like. Closing the box, Darren looked back up at Grant, "Dude, I thought you were proposing to me. What a bummer," he joked, laughing a bit. "But in all seriousness, I'm really happy for you, bro. You, Vanessa and Lady Bug make the perfect little family."
Grant: laughed, "Yeah because the world needs more Criss/Gustin love!" He smiled, "Thanks, Darren. It means a lot that you think that. Now that favor I had to ask of you..." He shifted in his seat and sighed, "My mom has been planning Vanessa and my wedding since we started going out. And... Well, you've met my mom. She's intense. So pretty much everything is left up to her and Vanessa to decide when it's going to happen and what not but there's one thing that is my decision and that's my best man." He smiled at Darren, "So what do you think, D? Would you be my best man?"
Darren: 's face brightened at Grant's question. "That's such an honor, bro. I would love to be your best man!" He said, jumping up to give Grant another hug. As he sat back down, his smile quickly faded as he began to think about Dianna and the plans they were making for their wedding. It was a stressful process, but exciting at the same time. Pushing thoughts away, Darren handed the ring box back to Grant and changed the subject. "Would like anything to drink? A snack or something"
Grant: stood up and hugged Darren back, grinning. He watched his friend carefully as he noticed the faded smile. Accepting the box back, he put it in his pocket and shook his head, "I'm okay thanks. I'm really glad you want to do it, it'll be great having my best friend there with me." He smiled softly, "What's going on dude? Talk to me."
Darren: sat back, running a hand over his face as he thought about what he wanted to say. "I really miss Dianna and I want her back but I'm not the same guy I used to be," he paused, "I'm... I'm miserable without her, man," he said, his voice a little shaky.
Grant: watched Darren and sighed, "What happened? I mean you guys were... What changed?" He couldn't figure out why Darren and Dianna had broken up. With the exception of Matt and Lea, he had never seen a couple so intent on standing by each other no matter what. "What can I do? Tell me how to help and I will. I'll help you get her back."
Darren: shrugged, "I just started drinking again. I would wake up everyday needing to have a drink. It became a real problem. I started lashing out on everyone, even my own mother," he quickly wiped the tears from under his eyes, "I said some nasty things to Dianna, like hurtful things and... we broke up." Covering his face, Darren continued to cry, unable to stop the tears from falling. This was the first time he opened up to someone about this and felt it good let the emotions he kept bottled up for so long out. He grabbed the end up his shirt and wiped his eyes, shaking his head. "She deserves better."
Grant: got up from his seat and went to sit next to Darren on the couch, placing a hand on his back. "Are you still drinking?" he asked when Darren had finished. It hurt him to see his best friend like this, and he wanted to help. "I mean, this is something that we can work through, right? I'll help you get back to where you need to be, and maybe you can give it another shot. I know you think she deserves better, but honestly... I've never seen Dianna happier than when she was with you. You ask Ness. I'm sure she'll tell you the same thing."
Darren: shook his head again, "No. I but haven't touched that shit in weeks," he told him truthfully. "I can work through it. I've been seeing a therapist twice a week and getting treatment for my addiction." Darren nodded as he listened to Grant. "Do you really think she'll take me back, though? After everything that has happened? I mean, I really hurt her, Grant."
Grant: sighed, "I don't know. I think she misses you though. I mean, she loved you and I'd put money on the fact that she still does." He ran a hand through his hair, "You're trying to get better, and that's a big step in itself. I know you, man. You're strong, you're a fighter, but sometimes we all need help... Just out of curiosity, what did you say to her?"
Darren: shifted in his seat, trying to remember what he said Dianna. He was drunk at the time, so his memory was a bit foggy. "I told her she was fucked up and it was her fault she had the miscarriage. Like, I made her out to be the worst person ever. There was much more to it, but I can't remember. Sorry, man."
Grant: tried not to look too shocked. He knew that for them to break up it would have to have been bad, but he hadn't imagined something like that. "I guess... Well, I guess alcohol makes us do some really stupid things. And it kicks our asses having to try and make up for whatever we did." He sighed, "Listen, I think that if we work on keeping you sober and everything then you have a fair chance at getting her back. Because, I'm going to be honest dude, I haven't seen you this miserable since... I don't even know. A long time. So let me help you. I'll come with you to these therapy session things if you want." He thought for a moment, "Have you sent her flowers?"
Darren: cracked a smiled, bringing Grant into another hug. After all of the things Darren had just told him, Grant still wanted to help him and support him. "Thanks, Grant. I really appreciate it." He paused for a second, "No, I haven't. I think I will now that you mentioned it. But I think I'm gonna have to do more than just send her flowers to win her heart back," he chuckled.
Grant: hugged Darren back and smiled, "Any time, bro. I have no doubt that you will be able to win her back. I mean, you on her once, you can do it again. Everything just has to be amplified." He paused, "Women are peculiar creatures. I mean what do they want from us? They want us to ask, they don't want us to ask. They want us to do something, but only if it's done their way. And yet we love them. I have no shame in admitting that I am whipped. If Ness snaps her fingers then I come running. It's the whole 'I say jump, you say how high' thing." He shook his head, smiling when Smorgs came trotting over to them and nudged his way under Grant's arm.
Darren: agreed with every word his best friend said. Even though he didn't like to admit it at times, Darren was whipped. They weren't together at the moment, but he was still willing to do everything and anything for Dianna. Darren smirked, "Speaking of Vanessa, when do you plan on giving her that ring?"
Grant: chuckled, "When I go back to the hospital. I told her I was getting some other stuff and feeding Smorgs, all of which I have done, so it's not lying. I don't really know how to do it, seeing as I've already asked her to marry me. I guess I'll just give her the box. She'll probably have Daisy with her, so there isn't much I can do." He smiled, "My mom is going to go crazy when she finds out."
Darren: nodded, "Well, you better get your ass back to the hospital and give it to her. Don't keep her waiting," he chuckled, playfully nudging Grant.
Grant: laughed and nodded, "Yeah, you're probably right." He made a sound like a whip and smiled at Darren, standing up. Smorgs leapt to his feet and trotted to the door. Grant turned back to Darren, "Hang in there man. It'll get easier and better. Call me if you need anything, okay?" At Darren's nod, he hugged his friend once more and picked up the dog's leash as he opened the door. "I'll let you know how everything goes," he called back, waving as he got into his car, making sure Smorgs was secure before starting the drive back home, and then to the hospital again.
