Awhile ago I saw someone say that Emma and Sophie looked a lot like Clea, and now I can't unsee it, and this was born from that.

Basically Gustave was becoming aware that things weren't normal. After he and Sophie broke up, he started noticing that many of Lumière's people looked similar to eachother. It wasn't that concerning at first, seeing as how the population was being gommaged each year. The gene pool wasn't exactly very large anymore. But then it was like he was seeing the same faces over and over again. just with different hair colors or hair styles.

He confesses this to Verso one night after they find out the truth of their world.
