As expected, Mr. Hale refused to meet the demands of his workers, or negotiate in good faith. But the men held true to their word and began their strike.
Some people seemed curious about their signs and slogans, but all of them, some refusing to meet their eyes, simply stepped around them and entered the store, anyway.
It was disheartening, but they refused to move or be discouraged.
It was until the second day when a couple they all recognized as frequent patrons of the store approached. After hearing about their cause, the couple discussed amongst themselves how to proceed. Words like eggs, yarn, and do without were whispered quietly.
With a sympathetic nod and a word of encouragement, the couple decided they would not be shopping that day. Lawrence, Preston and Guy watched as they departed, listening to their footsteps echoing along the boardwalk for several beats.
When the shock wore off, the men let out a victorious round of cheers, holding their signs more proudly above their heads than before.
