This drawing, as you can see, was made in my journal. It’s very personal to me but that didn’t stop me from bringing it to class one day. A real Belgian rock legend came to talk to us at school, about his rocky path to fame. I was beyond amazed because at first, I didn’t know what to expect from a famous person but when he walked in, sat down, chatted with us and told us the story of his life, he was much, much more.

He was honest, far more honest than I ever thought I could be. He was kind. He had a past and a future and he was sharing it with us in the present. I found out he was just a man and that was so special to me in a way. At the end, I had to muster up all my courage to go and ask him if he could sign my drawing. No longer because he was oh so famous, but because he was oh so honest and oh so real and I was scared he would see right through me and the quote I’d picked: “Love, hate, can’t think straight. Life, death, what is best?”

He wrote [translated] “Very fun drawing! Keep it up!”. I barely spoke a word, I was really in awe somehow. But he told me about his son being very artistic as well and asked me if I was going to pursue ‘my talents’. The whole conversation was such a boost, so I thanked him later on his Facebook page when I was finally able to try and find some words for this encounter. It meant a lot and he deserved to know that. He even replied: [translated]

I wear my heart on my sleeve. :-) Openness and sincerity make you vulnerable but only to those with bad intentions. Other wise it brings people closer and that’s my intention. Spread the love! :-) 

These are wise words that I from then on always tried to carry in my heart. And yeah, I knew he had seen right through me.

TE GEK!?

Gisteren stond Marcel Vanthilt samen met Guy Swinnen, Wannes Cappelle en Stefaan Degand op het podium van het Cultuurcentrum in Heusden-Zolder. Samen speelden ze voor een uitverkochte zaal. TE GEK!? tracht al jaren psychische problemen bespreekbaar te maken en streeft naar een juiste beeldvorming over psychische problemen. 

Marcel Vanthilt las gedurende de voorstelling af en toe uit een gedichtenboek, het boek was geschreven door een persoon met manische depressiviteit. Ik had nooit verwacht dat Vanthilt zo een goede spreker was (sorry voor mijn onwetendheid). Ook zijn nummers als ’Paracetamol’ en ’In Mijn Pyjama’ waren tijdens zijn live performance van een hoogstaand niveau. 

De nummers van Guy Swinnen kregen heel de zaal mee, misschien zit het programma ‘Liefde voor muziek’ hier voor een stukje achter? Wannes Capelle bracht enkel nummers gezongen in een dialect. Voor hij begon aan zijn eerste nummer zei hij: ‘’Je verstaat misschien de tekst niet, maar muziek is voor iedereen verstaanbaar’’. Deze zin vond ik best wel diepgaand. Of je nu blank of zwart of geel bent, muziek is voor iedereen hetzelfde. Het opvallendste personage van de hele show was hoogstwaarschijnlijk wel Stefaan Degand. Nog voor de show begon stond hij al in zijn badjas op het podium naar het publiek te staren. Gedurende de hele show zei hij geen 1 woord, enkel na de show werd duidelijk dat hij een manisch depressieve speelde. 

Ik vind het goed dat bv’s aandacht schenken aan dit onderwerp, zeker omdat dit in 2015 geen taboe meer mag zijn! Liever TE GEK dan TE NORMAAL. Ik heb zeker geen spijt dat ik deze show heb bijgewoond en raad ook iedereen aan om deze show minstens 1X te boeken!
