For this weeks blog post, I am going to talk about some advertisements that are not like the ones I have previously discusses. I have come across some ads that challenge and shatter gender roles. I have seen countless ads that ad to the idea that our society needs to have gender roles in place. For example, I have looked at multiple ads for cleaning products that only depict women. This provokes the stereotype that women are responsible for the housework rather than the men. One ad that stood out to me that I found was an advertisement for a child’s play kitchen. What stood out to me about this ad was the fact that it showed a little boy and little girl both playing with the kitchen set. Growing up, I remember that the “girls” toy aisle had many products that were related to cooking and cleaning. This ad shows that cooking is actually for boy and girls and not just girls. The toys that are made for children are part of the reason that we grow up with these stereotypes in our head that are irrational. The girls aisles were made up of dolls, stuffed animals, and everything was pink. The boys aisle was more blue and dark colors and consisted of cars, trucks, guns, etc. Children shouldn’t be under the impression that they can only way with a certain type of toy. If a boy wants to play with dolls and if a girl wants to play with the trucks then that is okay. Categorization of gender is taught to use at a very young age.
