“What? You don’t appreciate a good joke?” (fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight)
“I’d say your existence is the real joke but comedy offers something of value to society and alas, you do not.”
six o’clock in wall market.
aerith gainsborough was the queen of bad ideas.
nerves wracked through her, mind racing a thousand miles an hour. agreeing to meet him here ... busy as the streets were she knew in the very pit of her stomach just how quickly this could go south. he could show with an army, he could hide them throughout the nameless faces enjoying the multitude of pleasures that sector 6′s nightlife had to offer. he could have warned the president, gone back on his word (what was his word worth, aerith wondered), or even just snatched her and tossed her over his shoulder ... called it a day. the possibilities were endless. but aerith wasn’t one to back down from any challenge, to break her word. so at the mouth of wall market she stood, fists clenched between the billows of her sundress where they plumed at her hips, willing herself to move through.
know your exits. there was the obvious escape behind her and the numerous alleys of the market itself. she knew the slums as well as the veins at the back of her hand but surely the director of public safety knew them just as well. perhaps she’d have an edge: adorned in something other than the static pink shift she was known for, hair in loose waves around slender shoulders --- black tinging her attire where the usual sweet pastels marked her. it drew more than one interested eye as she parted herself through the crowd, ignored the occasional commentary or greeting tossed her way. no, she would look him in the eye and smile that sweet smile like she promised --- head to somewhere safe and see if she could perhaps persuade him away from his mission.
fat chance.
it was worth a shot anyway, right?
curiosity pricked at the nape of her neck, pulled the finer hairs there to stand on end when she was sure she sighted him. who else stood a clean head above everyone else? who else had shoulders so broad and a presence so commanding that even the crowd of wall market offered him some personal space? a quick glance around the bustling throng told her there were no infantrymen in sight (at least not to the immediate eye), but she wasn’t silly enough to assume that meant he wasn’t ... capable.
“ hey, heidegger. i wouldn’t buy anything with velcro. it’s a total rip-off. ” just out of arm’s reach, speaking loud enough to catch his attention. emerald green eyes shined up at him, a smirk threatening usual puckishness slapped across her face. coy. she could do this.
a plotted started i’m screamin’ about for @gyahahahaha.

It was around 5pm when the call came – Melissa had been in her office, running the numbers from the previous month of the inn and having two of the girls handle inventory count in the basement. She picked the phone up and almost dropped it when Tseng’s voice warned her – President Shinra and some other high-ranking executives wanted to take a trip to Wall Market that night.
It had been enough to throw the inn into complete chaos until opening hours.
Receiving the president meant that a lot of additional measures needed to be taken, based on his previous visits. The special suite was to be cleaned impeccably, the kitchen needed to make sure they had everything for his favorite requests and the girls were to be nothing but radiant. He was never without an entourage as well – so Melissa and the other girls made changes to the lounge layout, allowing for a larger area at the back to prepared for the most important client of the night.
That lounge area was reserved to the president whenever he came – the Turks had investigated the place extensively before, and had deemed that corner the safest one. In addition to the special suite, Melissa also had at least other three reserved for whoever was to accompany the president, knowing fully well they were also going to be inspected by the Turks before anyone was allowed inside for some private time with her girls.
It also meant it was a night where she needed to be on the floor, full-time – not only to manage the other tables, but to ensure nothing could spoil the president’s evening. Melissa made sure to pick a suitable attire for the occasion – she selected an emerald one-shoulder model, with an asymmetric front slit made from pleated silk. A pair of black sandals completed the attire, which later received the additions of pair of long gold earrings and the traditional bracelets and rings she always showcased during work hours.
By the time the president arrived, everything was perfectly in order – the traditional pleasantries were exchanged with the Turks, and then the president himself was led to the reserved area, as well as the selected companions for that night: Melissa immediately recognized Palmer, Hojo and Heidegger, and set about to select the girls who were likely to have more success entertaining them.
The President was easy – the names didn’t really matter as far as the girls were young, beautiful and capable of stroking his ego. Palmer was a regular customer, so for him Melissa sent his two favorite girls, whereas for Hojo it was always a challenge – some nights he wanted new faces, others he sought the companion of older girls, back from the time when the inn was in hands of the Don – so the mistress made a combination of these two things and sent them to the scientist.
Now Heidegger… He was a familiar face to everyone in the slums thanks to the media coverage of all events topside, but he wasn’t a frequent guest there. The woman first tried some of the more easygoing and gentle girls, but he appeared bored; then she switched to more experienced and flirty girls, but instead he looked slightly offended and the girls were scared to return. It clearly wasn’t working.
Well, that settled it – Melissa was the one who would need to step in. She grabbed two glasses of bourbon and made her way towards the reserved area, smiling at Heidegger before easing herself into the open spot next to him after the other girls left. “Welcome to the Honey Bee Inn, director. I don’t think we have met before – I’m Melissa, the current owner” she introduced herself while offering one of the glasses, “I took the liberty to try and guess what sort of drink you would rather have and settled on bourbon,” she explained with a smile, “Would you care to entertain me and confirm my suspicions, perhaps?”

You have to eat Noct, Carbuncle squeaked at him him from his position on his shoulder, tail draped around his neck. The boy let out a soft sigh. He knew that. It had been a few days at least since he’d last eaten and it was beginning to take its toll. He was tired, weak and skinnier than he’d ever been in his life and he’d always been skinny. He hated stealing, but eventually hunger overpowered his morals as it always did, forcing him to steal just to stay alive. He’d never considered such a life until his father’s death but he couldn’t go back there. Not to his uncle.
“I know, Carb.” He murmured as he pushed himself up from his seat on the ground and dusted himself off, not that it went far in making him look at all presentable. Looking at him now, nobody would think he was the son of a noble – a Prince if Midgar hadn’t invaded. He’d put that life behind him now though.
He made his way through the crowded slums, keeping his head down and trying to appear as inconspicuous as possible as he scoped out the area for targets. Children often went unnoticed by adults. It was part of the reason he insisted Carb stayed behind. The small fox drew too much attention.
A horse with an expensive looking saddle bag caught his eyes. It clearly belonged to someone with money which made him feel better. Chances were, the owner wouldn’t even notice if he took a few coins. Not in the great scheme of things, anyway. He glanced around, looking for the horse’s owner before approaching. Nobody seemed to be paying much attention to him, so he made a grab for the saddle bag.
