May 16 is Romani Resistance Day, when we remember the day in 1944 when the Romani and Sinti prisoners in the Auschwitz-Berkenau concentration camp rose up against their Nazi captors and held them off for several months. It’s a day to celebrate courage and commemorate loss, and to remember that we can and must do what we can with what we have, no matter where we are, no matter the odds. We are still here, and we are not defeated.
