Since the moment he was born, Myungsoo has been looking forward to meeting his soulmate. The name of his soulmate is kept safe next to his pulse point on the inside of his wrist. Sometimes, Myungsoo thinks that the pulse of his soulmate is what keeps his heart beating too. He likes the name too, Nam Woohyun, he can’t wait for the day that he meets him.
But the first time that Myungsoo meets Woohyun, he only sees him for a split second, but that second lasts forever. In that second, Woohyun is being pushed into the back of a truck filled with other people that the government has deemed as guilty even though none of them had done anything.
The next time that Myungsoo sees Woohyun, they’re young men, but somehow, Woohyun still smiles and laughs like a little boy. It excites Myungsoo to finally meet his soulmate, happily tracing his fingers over the letters of his name on the heel of Woohyun’s right hand. Even though Myungsoo is excited, Woohyun seems less excited, he seems slightly distant in a way that Myungsoo can’t quite put his finger on.
It’s been years since the war was over, but still Myungsoo remembers every single detail of those years. Even though it seems like the war is over on the surface, somehow, Myungsoo knows that under the surface, something is bubbling and getting ready to explode. He’s not far from wrong as one day, the air raid alarms go off and everything is thrown into a state of panic.
It was just Myungsoo’s luck to be on campus where the first of the rebellion is started. He had been hearing whispers of an uprising for months, but he never thought that it would be this day. Everyone around him is pushing and shoving, to get out of there or to join the mob that is growing, and Myungsoo stumbles around, not sure where to go.
Without a reason, Woohyun is suddenly there, grabbing onto Myungsoo’s arm and dragging him into safety as the students around them set one of the buildings on fire, screaming for change and justice. Woohyun tells him to stay there, wedged in a small alley way, where he promises where he’ll be safe and he’ll be back for Myungsoo when it’s safe. Then he’s gone without warning.
It gets loud and there’s a lot of screaming. Myungsoo stays in the little hideout as the screams escalate then die down until it’s quiet. The light of dawn is trickling over the buildings as Woohyun comes back, covered with soot and sweat. He holds out a hand to Myungsoo quietly and Myungsoo takes his hand.
They go bak to their apartment quietly, Woohyun doesn’t say anything as Myungsoo keeps on begging for him to tell him something, but still, he gives him a small smile and shakes his head. He tells Myungsoo to trust him and with all of his heart, Myungsoo does.
It’s weeks after the first uprising and there’s quite a few after that. Woohyun leaves the apartment often, not telling Myungsoo where he went. Myungsoo worries, staying up until Woohyun comes home, usually at the early hours of morning. One of those mornings, Myungsoo is nodding off in a chair by the window, staring at the grey skies of dawn when the door quietly opens and Woohyun comes into the room. Woohyun sits down beside him and tells him that he should go to bed without him, but when Myungsoo asks again about where he was, all he says is to go to sleep and to trust him for a little while.
The next day, Myungsoo is making supper for Woohyun even though he knows that he won’t be home for supper (he still clings onto the hope of “maybe”) when someone knocks on the door. It surprises Myungsoo to see police officers there, asking for Woohyun. Even when Myungsoo says that he isn’t home, he’s roughly pushed aside and the police start searching their apartment. Myungsoo’s begs of, “Don’t touch that” or “Leave that alone” are ignored as another officer pesters Myungsoo about Woohyun being the leader of a rebel group. The police only leave when they’re sure that there’s nothing, leaving behind a ruined apartment and Myungsoo crying alone with the burnt remains of supper.
When Woohyun returns home, Myungsoo demands answers, screaming and throwing the ruined parts of one of the chairs at Woohyun as he won’t reply. Myungsoo knows what was coming and cuts off Woohyun before he can ask Myungsoo to trust him, swearing that he won’t trust Woohyun until he tells Myungsoo the truth. Instead of telling Myungsoo, Woohyun yells back that he doesn’t care and it’s okay if Myungsoo doesn’t trust him. It hurts Myungsoo so much as Woohyun screams, “Don’t trust me at all then!” slamming the bedroom door, leaving Myungsoo to sleep on the couch.
In the morning, when Woohyun leaves, Myungsoo makes up his mind and follows Woohyun down the streets. Woohyun enters a club without glancing backwards and Myungsoo is quick to follow him, but before he knows it, something is smashed over his head and he loses conscious.
Myungsoo wakes up and finds himself tied to a chair, unable to move. There are three men standing in front of him, looking ready to chop his head off, but Myungsoo only has eyes for Woohyun. Woohyun just avoids his gaze and Myungsoo’s pleads as the one in charge asks Myungsoo if he was a rat for the police. Myungsoo tells them over and over again that he’s not, but the truth never works and no matter what it always hurts.
It’s hours later, Myungsoo figures that it must be around sunset, a time that he dreamed of sharing with his soulmate, when Woohyun returns alone. Myungsoo begs for Woohyun to let him go, to trust him that he wasn’t an spy, that he loves Woohyun too much to betray him even if it is on accident. Woohyun doesn’t say anything, only shoving a gag into his mouth and reaching for his wrist where it is tied onto the arm of the chair.
The fire burns Myungsoo’s skin and Myungsoo cries as Woohyun scorches off his soulmate tattoo, cutting off their ties. Tears rush down Myungsoo’s cheeks as Woohyun leaves the room without looking back once. Myungsoo used to think that Woohyun’s name supplied him with life, keeping his heart beating. Now, he knows it’s true as his heart is ripped to pieces as Woohyun takes everything away from him.
The next time Myungsoo sees Woohyun, neither of them say anything as Woohyun feeds Myungsoo. Woohyun doesn’t wipe off the tears running down Myungsoo’s cheeks like he might have a couple of months ago. Just as Woohyun turns to leave, Myungsoo whispers that he still trusts Woohyun, because he does. He really does.
Those words make Woohyun freeze and stop, for a moment, Myungsoo hopes, but Woohyun shatters those hopes with simple words, “Don’t trust me. It won’t work.”
Myungsoo is trapped in the dark for hours so it surprises him as suddenly the lights are thrown on and Woohyun plus another guy comes into the room. Myungsoo sees the gun in his hands and he keeps his eyes on Woohyun as he’s untied and forced up the stairs. Even with Myungsoo’s gaze never leaving him, Woohyun doesn’t look at him, following as Myungsoo is forced onto his knees in the middle of an empty parking lot. The gun is thrust into Woohyun’s hands and they’re left alone with the warning if Woohyun didn’t do it, someone else would come and kill the two of them.
The two soulmates stare at each other, Myungsoo nearly desperately and Woohyun looking at him with maybe just a little tiny bit of remorse.
“This is why I told you not to trust me,” Woohyun finally says, raising the gun to point at Myungsoo’s head.
Myungsoo nods and closes his eyes, accepting his fate. “But I do.”
