‘Its a Mystery’ - GZverse writing Ft. Echo and Harumi

Maybe it was a calling, or a glitch in his memory. He swore someone had arrived, someone in blue and maybe another in magenta... and perhaps a few pirates as well? And this name.. this ‘Echo’ that rang through his head.. where did these all come from?

He had not seen ships sail by ever, save for the one that could fly. It worried him that his creator had left him, worried that he was unable to protect doctor. But deep down, he knew the real reason why.

Echo did not want to admit that he was a placeholder, but he knew it so. Doctor Julien had admitted it to him a few times, but it did not sting until he was gone for good. Now here he stood on the edge of the rocks, facing outward into the endless sea.

No one was coming for him, but he did not need to let that be a bother. The seagulls migrated inland in v-shapes, and he intended on doing something similar.

Gizmo beeped at him, startling the droid. “You are still free to come with me, my old friend.” Echo smiled through rusted teeth.

But the small droid said nothing, and so he set his foot into the saltwater.

She came back in the night to the spot on the beach where she had found him. By now he was practically berried in the wet sand, the waves lapping against his form. She began pulling him out, his arms popping off and causing her to yelp. Even scarier, his voice came out in slow dying warbles.

“You’re not like those sentry droids, are you?” Harumi asked him innocently, finally pulling his torso free from the muck. His clouded yellow eyes stared at her, unable to blink or look away from the algae growth that had overtaken parts of him.

“Certainly not,” she answered herself, “you look like the ice ninja, but in horrible condition. Did they neglect you as well?”

‘everyone did.’ he wanted to say, but only a low tone rattled. She studied him, half tempting to leave him there, but if he was a product of their heroics, then that meant he was an ally. “Don’t worry, I will get you fixed up.”

Echo laid on the workbench, idly playing with his new hands. Just about everything on him was replaced, save for his face plate and upper torso, with parts form other discarded androids. “I thank you again.” He said as Harumi waked into the workshop.

“You’ve overthanked me enough for fixing you,” She laughed, “but now you have a new reason.”

He picked up his head to see her holding a neural drive, the purple circuit markings perplexing him. He had never seen something like that before, but then again there were plenty of things he had never seen. “What is that?”

She walked around back of him and helped him sit up, “You know our little dilemma of ‘do no harm’?” She pulled open the drive-hatch on the base of his neck.

Indeed, he was programmed by 4 laws: Do no harm to people, do no harm to oneself, and follow all orders lest they conflict with the other two laws. And of course the final, ‘protect those who cannot protect themselves’, something he learned his ‘better half’ had as well. “You have found a loophole?” He asked.

Harumi had primed him, injected the notion of revenge and justice into his train of thought. Not that he didn’t have those feelings before, but the reinforcement of them was the push he needed to formulate a better opinion of the Ninja.

“Cyrus Borg apparently had a few defective models of his prime assistant that he had discarded. The problem was that they were too unstable in their line of thinking, something about how they had too much free will to abide by what was considered standard.” She stuck the drive into him, “Something about being prone to anger.”

Echo stared at her, the drive booting and the data flowing. At first he felt no different, but slowly and surely the new coding integrated. “Do you think this will truly work?”

“I don’t know,” Harumi picked up the helmet that sat nearby and held it out to him, “How about we find out, ‘Mr. E’.”
