We are finally back for a new season and man was I hyped! I'm not sure if it was the long wait or the production going overboard with this one but I actually had to watch the episode twice in a row without pause it was THAT awesome.
I'm not proud to admit this but I do have to come clean: eventhough I knew this episode was a homage to to the 1968 pilot episode, I did not watch it. I could probably argue that life got in the way, and though it's true, I could have found 45 minutes over these past four months and actually sit down for it. That being said, I can only review this episode from a newbie standpoint, I won't be able to draw any comparison to the original one. It might be for the best, but I still want to kick myself in the butt for sucking as a fan.
Now onto the good stuff!
Did I mention I like Tani now? I'm sure I did say I've grown fond of her, specially during the final episodes of S8 but boy, is she becoming an absolute fave now! She's the ultimate McDanno lovechild. She's the badass baby-SEAL-in-training Kono used to be but her snark? That's all Jersey, babe. #offended. With all the debate that's been going on in my country over feminism and equality I couldn't help but let out a chuckle and rewatch that scene a couple of times because #represent. I'm glad no one's forgetten about the loose ends last season left us with. I NEED a follow-up on Adam's storyline but a good one, none of that crap they pulled with Danny's shooter. I wouldn't want to be in Tani's position AT ALL. No matter what she ends up doing, it will backfire on the Ohana. There's no happy ending there, and they are already setting us up for the inevitable heartbreak.
I don't even wanna know exactly how much money Kamekona invested in Steve's but those where some large bags.... They are going to need to dig up he entire backyard to hide it all. Which is another thing that will probably backfire eventually. I've seen the promotional pics of the finished restaurant but with this show that's no guarantee they are real... It's nice to know that the retirement plot still sits heavilly on the plot, because after Steve's "old me" line I'm more convinced than ever that the show ends once Steve's is up and running and the boys are chilling at home.
Danny motherhenning Steve will never get old. Whether it's looking out for Steve's emotional responses or his physical safety, Danny's always there to rant till he's hoarse. A man after my own heart. And can we actually take a moment to appreciate how smoothly they eliminated Lynn? Just an off-hand comment and puff, Steve's back in the market. And this is where I got stuck in my endless shipper loop. I do need someone to tell me if I got this wrong (not a native speaker here), but isn't the phrase "look who's talking/counting/anything" used to call on someone who's called on us? Kinda like a pot, meet kettle situation. Meaning, Danny is giving Steve a hard time because A) he broke up with his steady girlfriend and B) he hasn't dated since. And Steve's is implying that Danny is not so better off himself. Are him and Amberlissa having issues? Did THEY break up too? Are we finally having a girlfriends-free season that is canon with Danny's GSW-induced hallucinations? Oh dear Pele, my prayers are being answered!
But I disgress, as usual.
I do want to commend the production for going all out here. I'm sure episode #200 is going to be spectacular but this one clearly holds a special place in Lenkov's and the rest of the cast and crew's hearts. It had a larger-than-life feel to it. Except for Adam, Duke and the kids, EVERYONE was there. Even Jerry, Pua and Eddie. It included some flashback footage of a warzone and a pretty large gunfire scene with lots and lots of people. Not to mention, the sensory-deprivation watertank chamber and everything that came with it. I'm actually quite pleased with the effort they so clearly put here. Kudos to them!
There's not much to say about the plot development since this is clearly the starting point of the big, bad evil plan of this season's villain, but it did move rather smoothly. It was pretty staight forward in a manner of not having that many dead scenes or moments, and just staying constantly on the move. Clues were unearthed fast, leads were positive and fulfilling and everything just kinda moved towards the end without rushing it.
If this is what we can expect for the rest of the season then I'm already sold because it really was an amazing opening.

All the money Steve owed to Danny, all the promises he made that he wasn’t willing to come through with, after 9.01 he kept saying, ah sorry no, I have no recollection of that,
