thinking about hades 3, and while I love some of the head canons I've seen (I feel way less alone seeing so many people inspired by creativity and mythology!!) I'd personally be super curious to see:
[slight spoiler alert for hades 2 final boss in the last mention]
- Gaia, titaness of the Earth. She could be either a benevolent major force or an interesting neutral force like Chaos; or!!! a very angry and powerful antagonist 👀
- Asclepius, demigod hero who could have the guardian role maybe? His staff is famously the symbol of medicine still!
- Apate, being a daughter of Nyx (personification of deceit) especially with her connection to Hera/Zeus/Dionysus;
- the Keres, also daughters of Nyx and personification of violent deaths!!! Would be amazing to see them as probably antagonists, given their contrast to Thanatos (death / peaceful death) and also Makaria (blessed death if I'm not wrong);
- I would be super curious to see Supergiant's take on the Anemois (the four winds) or their father Aeolus (who has a connection to Odysseus and was his friend!). Maybe their boons could give a chaotic wind effect similar to Demeter's or Zeus'? Could be interesting and fun.
- I also would be so so curious to see Pan or have him mentioned (idk if he was? I don't think so?). But we have Dionysus, we had Satyrs, we've had a lot of nymphs mentioned or seen, so why not bring on the god of the wild?
- PLEAZE give me Echidna as a boss since we've had Typhon 🤪
I'll add more if they come to mind!!!!!
My own take on Macaria potential Hades 3 (if they ever make it which I don’t think they will) protagonist
I have a lot of different plot ideas floating around in my head so maybe I'll talk about that a bit more if I ever sort them into something coherent
Hades 2 ending explanations, theories & Hades Trilogy
One thing I realized is that the Hades 2 ending is similar to the first game's ending with the original task not actually happening, in Zagreus' case it being escaping the underworld and defeat his father which quickly turned into a get your mom back and fix relationships with everyone including your dad with this being a similar case though definitely more out of nowhere unless there's now more dialogue that hints at this at the game's full release.
Another funny thing I thought about when the full game was released is how Zagreus wasn't nerfed, what I mean is that in most superhero movies powerful secondary characters that crossover or are just powerful tend to be nerfed in some way just so the main hero can defeat the bad guy, but despite melinoe being the main character, zagreus ability to fix relationships wasn't just ignored for some reason just because he isn't the main character, it still applies as well as the first game's message.
the last thing I wanted to say is that while I think it will be a while, I'm pretty sure that Hades 3 will in part conclude the trilogy. basically imagine each game that while they all work as their own stand alone story are all technically part of a trilogy with the beginning (Hades/Zagreus) - Middle (Hades II/Melinoe) - and end (Hades III/Makaria) which is even so fitting if you think about it, Zagreus is blood, life and rebirth (=Birth, Beginning), Melinoe is ghosts, basically a transition or journey between life and death as well as a duality deity (=Living, Middle) and Makaria is blessed death, specifically for those who has truly accepted it or needs the sweet release of death (=Death, End) or if you take into her connection to the blessed isles a place you can only reach if you have earned Elysium THREE times after being reborn while she would have the THIRD game of the series... get what I mean?
Hades 3 (continued setup)
Let's talk about Persephone's role in Hades as a franchise.
As a series, Hades establishes its stakes by turning the Oedipal drama of Greek myth into a cycles-of-abuse story. Sons slaughter their fathers, then grow into fathers worth slaughtering by their own sons, who themselves, etc.; the games, whose ethos is distinctly modern and therapeutic despite its ancient and mythic milieu, have their protagonists defy this cycle and heal their households, though Hades performs this somewhat more effectively than Hades 2 by restricting its scope to family drama. (Hades 2's stakes are too big and abstract – war in Heaven, etc. – to easily map onto the "save my neglected evil grandpa from loneliness and the rest follows" dynamic of its ending, which leaves it feeling a little muddled.)
Persephone, in Hades, is sort of a specter of the Happy Family, hanging over the story. The prospect of her return to the House is what spurs Hades to reconcile with Zagreus and with Olympus, and her arrival in the ending of Hades 2 signals that the House of Hades is restored to its former glories.
She's been denied a chance at active motherhood, only meeting her children as adults without any real chance to raise them. Hades's mythic background is built on (largely unstated/unarticulated) myths where the gods behave terribly, so Persephone can't be involved in her children's lives; to be the Good Mother, she has to not be there when they're growing up, so that their lives can be bad enough to justify running. She also, notably, comes from a background of (implied, if unstated/unspecified) abuse at Demeter's hands. She is party to the reconciliation of her household, twice, but never an active participant in it – our protagonists fix the House for her sake, hypothetically, but she only decides to come back to it once the core narrative dramas of each game (Zagreus-Hades, Melinoe-Chronos) are already done with.
So: Persephone raises her youngest, at last. She gets to raise Makaria, herself. She's carrying a lot of resentment that she's largely put away for the sake of smoothing over relations with recently-hostile parties – the Olympians to the Chthonics and Chronos to his children – and Makaria, innocent and horrified by what she learns, makes herself her mother's avenger. Maybe it's my relative age here, but I'm finding myself more interested in the dynamics of Hades from the other end – a mother realizing she isn't perfect and she isn't finished dealing with her history, acting on a knee-jerk impulse to shut down her daughter's legitimate grievances because she's acting on those grievances in a way that still denies Persephone's right to make decisions about how she was treated, and what to do about it.
Pursuant to this, the way Zagreus's first god is Athena and Melinoe's is Apollo, Persephone's is Demeter: with their positions exactly reversed, too, Persephone as the Queen of the Dead and Demeter as a young Goddess of Growing Things who's shed her winter theming and occupied Persephone's old "Goddess of Verdure/Spring" role. Persephone finds herself, abruptly, in a position of power over her old (amnesiac, child-sized) abuser, who is not in any real sense guilty of her old crimes, but who could be the person who did it, given the right conditions. Abruptly and without warning, Persephone has another chance at a good relationship with her mother, but she carries all the weight and pain of her bad relationships with her. Makaria is bliss, and also ignorance, a wonderful death and a peaceful paradise and a family reconciled to one another, but one built on sacrifice (cf. the Makaria who is the daughter of Hercules, who gave her life) and on obscuring the nature of that paradise.
So, there's your common motif for NPCs, the way Hades did "tried to cheat death" and Hades 2 did "punished by the gods in horrific fashion" and then kind of went nowhere with it. Hades 3 looks at parents and children, sacrifice and control. I was leaning towards Rhadamanthus as a first boss, but given both his role as a judge of the dead and his behavior towards Asterius (callback!), I'm more inclined to go with Minos, now, to whom Makaria delegates some of the duties of judgment that once belonged to Hades. A judge with a guilty conscience due to an estranged son, whom we're already inclined to like from Hades!
PLEASE RAMBLE ABOUT YOUR HADES THREE IDEAS! I adore your thoughts omg
Omg thank you!! I'll consider it. I'm actually thinking of sketching underworld gods' boon giving sprites since the idea of chthonic boons really excite me!!
okay in regards to maca's armory i feel like option 6 should just be straight up a laser cannon after exagryph and xinth's presentations
perhaps make the foreign aspect be amaterasu's yata no kagami
OMG I HAD THE EXACT SAME IDEA!! Her last weapon is a giant laser cannon that channels the users powers in a concetrated beam. Since my Maca has fire powers (Like Hades). So like, a laser sniper cannon?
There's a character named Senna in League of Legends that has a giant soul devouring cannon and i'm really obsessed with her animations. I made my Macaria skinny (Like Chronos) and i really love the idea of her carrying arround a giant weapon.
Hades 3 weapons
Whip
Hammer
Mace
Saber
Scythe
double gunas
what kind of weapons do you think could be in Hades 3 if it became a thing
