The Newt, Somerset, was formerly known as Hadspen House, so it is not surprising to find that the cultivar Lobelia × speciosa 'Hadspen Purple' was being grown in the borders of the recently created garden. This semi-evergreen perennial has upright stems and is best planted in deep, fertile and moist soil in sun or partial shade.
