                     …      ━━━    THE WINNER OF THE BOAR HUNT IS REVEALED     ━━━      …

                                   ・    ・                                                     ・    ・     AFTER A CONCLUSIVE CHECK,  the chief eunuch leans in to whisper in the king’s ear.  the results are mumbled behind a hand so that no one may read their lips.  both the participants and their fathers wait with bated breath to see which team will emerge the victor and be granted a feast with the king - as well as bragging rights for at least the next month.  the injured are being tended to, but still, it’s a moment that is met with trepidation.

when the king sits up, he smiles at both of his sons.  “ we have the results.” he says jovially, speaking loud in the clearing so that everyone might hear him.  “ and i believe you’ll find them surprising.”  it’s been awhile since anyone has seen the king in such a good mood, but the chill in the air and the hunt always manages to make him feel like a young man again.

first, his eyes settle on prince san.  “ you seem to have had a little trouble with your team today.” he takes a look to where the young lord yonghan is being tended to in a tent, then back to him.  “ as the supreme commander, i know you’re used to losing men.  it must be hard to come back to your home and face an injury from the game we’ve shared in today, but your men have done well.  the sow you presented to me was a total of 70 KILOGRAMS - a fine weight, indeed.  she will help to feed the lot of us today.”

“ however,” and here, his eyes turn to the crown prince.  it is perhaps the first time jin has seen the king look on him with pride in his eyes, and a genuine smile.  “ the team that emerges victorious today is our crown prince’s, who has proven himself a capable leader.  the male boar you’ve presented me with was a total of 77 KILOGRAMS.”  he pauses, then looks to the team that stands behind him.  “ you’ve all earned your place at my table.  you will be invited to the palace on the eve of JANUARY 1ST to collect the feast as your win.”

he leans back then with a smile and it is clear that he’s pleased with the results.  “ for now, let us feast on the boars that my sons have gifted to me.  i crave the meat of the wild pig scorched by the fire.”

fanline would cover part of the scholar’s visage, sharp as the focus would only go to the dark eyes and the sheer shadow of the black gat above his head —glossed lips behind the lacquered wood and prettily painted paper in his hand drawing a thin line as alas, he was doing his best not to roll his eyes or let the spite find yet again voice in him, for he was still presiding in front of one who was not only more than noble, but who probably could cut him in half without wasting a bink of his eyes on him.

and to be real, who wanted the already exceedingly boring party where everyone is reminded of what they’ll never dream nor hope to achieve —in this life nor future ones— to turn into an unnecessary bloodshed over the bitterness of a withering flower ? 

( surely not the withering flower himself. )

“ as much as it is a very appreciated notice, your highness—— ” words like silk and the head of the teacher would tilt ever so slightly, beauty shimmering under the party lights and the flames of candles and torches, slight and slow the bat of long, curved lashes in the stare. his figure had undying grace when grazing closer to the man’s side, pitch irises to the side to barely deliver a look at the broad frame of shoulder and yes… the world was definitely cruel to the likes of himself, he’d sadly convey. “ ——whoever might be waiting for me is waiting for rain during drought season. ”

◦ ⟨   FATED.

            ◦  ◦          𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭      ━   as jinil expects it to be on a night like tonight - loud and with way too many bodies jammed together in too small a building.  jinil sighs and toys with the glass in his hand, waiting for the arrival of his boyfriend to slip into the chair next to him.  he’s clearly saving it for him, pulled close to his own seat and with his knee hanging into it as it is.  part of him wonders what’s taking jin so long and the other part doesn’t really mind it so much.  even without him here, there’s still enough people to watch making silly decisions in a crowd like tonight’s.

he’s keeping to himself and quickly averting his eyes if someone is clearly throwing a look at him - it’s better to turn them down quickly, even without words.  jinil puts the drink up to his lips and starts tapping his foot to the muffled music heard just from the speaker overhead.

it’s just then that he spots jin miraculously in the crowd, heading in through the door.  (  it’s just the truth, though - ... he can always tell where jin is, even in a crowd.  they’re just connected that way.  )  just as he’s about to call him over, someone slips into the seat beside him and startles jinil enough to pull his attention away, blinking quickly at the bigger man beside him with an honest clearing of his throat.  

“ excuse me ..” he starts off quietly, but politely - trying to get his attention.  “ i was saving that seat for someone.  he’s coming in right now -”

his words immediately brought the imagery of the wedding, even though it may not necessarily refer to the event. as much as he was not related to any of the families who lost a beloved one, it affected him in ways more than he imagined. eyes fluttered to the ground, hui kept silent for a moment. 

and yet, being a supreme commander - or being a royalty himself - the elder male stood tall, unwavering. hui couldn’t imagine the kind of courage, nor the burden he had to undertake with the happenings. but responsibilities come with greatness, born or acquired. he tried a smile, small, but apparent as he looked at san.

“ you look beautiful.”

             ━━━━━━━━   ◦  ◦     a laugh that sounds a little hollow escapes him when jinil hears the supreme commander’s words.  he’s not really sure how to react but the words bring to him a sadness that he can’t quite express because he doesn’t understand it.  instead, his eyes search for a reasonable explanation if his head can’t come up with one and it only comes in the form of the cup in san’s hand.  “ your highness.” he says lightly, carefully coaxing the cup from san’s hand.  “ i think you meant to compliment my wife and not me.” 

somehow, the words sound wrong coming from his own lips.  somehow, he knows that the assumption is wrong too, but jinil has no real reason to believe that san would be calling him beautiful.  he doesn’t have the subtle curves of a woman, his body is too hard and moreover, too handicapped to even be considered useful.  his eyes cast down to his hands, and he rolls san’s cup between his palms.

if he asked, would the commander take him away from here? the whispers are enough to drive him mad, and even san’s confused ( and confusing ) compliment do nothing but bring him more stones to add to his already heavy shoulders.  but jinil knows that he cannot, and that nothing would come of it anyway.  in the end, he’d have to return here, in the end he’d have to feel heartbroken by a wife who doesn’t love him when he truly cares for her.

so he says nothing.  “ please take care of yourself tonight, commander.  i don’t want anyone to say anything about you, too.”

“ well? how do i look?”

there were a few questions ringing through hyojin’s head at quite a fast speed. however, the main one was why san was asking him how he looked when the answer that came out of hyojin’s mouth was always always the same.

“you look good, brother. just like always.“ he answers, small smile tugging on his lips ever so slightly. it was a big day for a lot of people, so many emotions and thoughts going through so many people. it wasn’t the first wedding the young prince has attended, and he was sure it wouldn’t be the last. however, it always felt weird, knowing the fact that someday he would have to experience this. whatever… this was meant to be the newly married couple.

“what about me?“ hyojin asks back, not really caring what answer he’d get. it was almost always the same type of clothing he wore to these celebrations, this one no different than the one he wore on the last wedding he had to attend.

she feels confusion mask the way a heart breaks in two. the realization of the world’s greatest mysteries come undone before her eyes is one ruihan isn’t sure she’s ready to take with a willing hand quite yet. if she could, perhaps, she’d stay in her oblivion a little longer. in the oasis of dreams and a love that was unlike those she’s witnessed in her short life. marriage was a perfection coifed of the heaven’s divinity rather than what it was truly meant to be -- that was how her mother had phrased it. no -- love had never been part of the arrangement and the more ruihan knows, the smaller the world gets. the colder she feels in the embrace of the love she had been bred of -- supposedly. 

she finds herself stuttering under his gaze, expression falling from it’s gentle smile into one of crestfallen disappointment, that she has to ask -- once more, almost pleadingly ; the ghost of a grin trying to find it’s mate along her lips. “come again, your highness? i’m not sure i follow.”

a royal wedding ; accepting.

“do you?” there’s a twinge of surprise that coats her words, her eyes looking at the male suspiciously. of course there was a reason he said this, but seora was never one to pry. she knew better than to push for answers that she wouldn’t get. only due to the fact that she harbored her own secrets, her heart aching every second this wedding went on. after all, she no longer believed in true love like she once did. 

“shall i create an alibi for you? all you need do is ask.” the concerns melts into her words as she gazes at the male, knowing she’d do nearly anything to keep her royal siblings happy and safe.
