A Yokai a day 30: Hahakigami(箒神)

Are Tsukumogami hand brooms. They are believed to sweep out negativity lingering around houses.

A hahakigami is a type of tsukumogami that comes from a broom or sweeping brush. Traditionally, brooms were used in purification ceremonies, clearing out evil spirits and negative energy. Sometimes, after enough years have passed, these brooms can take on life, becoming tsukumogami.

Generally considered benevolent, hahakigami are often used as charms to aid in a safe and swift childbirth. They can sometimes be seen on windy autumn mornings, sweeping at the fallen leaves.

Staycation Doodle: Hahakigami Yokai

It’s a tsukumogami broom. I have no idea how to draw this. The Toriyama Sekien print I based this on looks just as weird and jumbled. Well, it’s a broom that sweeps crazily around during windy days. Due to a broom’s cleansing nature, it’s thought to sweep away bad luck and negativity.

Yeeeah! New brushes from DAUB! And they’re super fun to use. I’m trying out fluid ink and the updated marker brushes.

Hahakigami - TRANSLATION: broom spirit ALTERNATE NAMES: hōkigami APPEARANCE: A hahakigami is a tsukumogami which takes up residence in a broom. They can sometimes be seen on cold, windy late autumn mornings, sweeping wildly at the blowing leaves. ORIGIN: Long ago, brooms were not household cleaning tools, but actually holy instruments used in ritual purification ceremonies. They were used to on the air in a room or area in order to purify it and sweep out any evil spirits and negative energy that might be lingering there. Like any tool used for many years, a broom which reaches a very old age becomes a perfect home for a spirit — perhaps even moreso in the case of a hahakigami because of the ritual nature of its origin. Hahakigami are used also as magical charms for safe and quick childbirth. Because brooms are used to “sweep out” evil energy, a hahakigami acts as a sort of totem to “sweep out” the baby from its mother safely.
