Some people consider Hai Step Jun (はーいステップジュン) to be a Showa era magical girl story. Of course there’s no magic, but, then again, there’s no magic per se in Cutie Honey (キューティハニー) or Miracle Girl Limit-chan (ミラクル少女リミットちゃん). Both of those characters from the Toei Majokko Series were technology-based, which is closer to Jun, whose advanced intelligence allows her to work with machinery, perhaps nearly to the point of being analogous to magic.

I guess for me, I consider Jun to be magical girl-adjacent, but I love the way it forces me to think deeply about the boundaries of the genre.
