The process of figuring out the most efficient and precise way to cut down 18 printed sheets into individual pages to be adhered to mat board panels for the creation of an edition of 11 copies of Hail, Holy Queen (prayers for life on Earth).
Top four, clockwise from top left: first instinct to initially cut sheets into 3 long rows presented challenges (aborted); shaving 32nds of an inch, enjoying precision of new table top shears; resolved to cut vertical columns first, then honed in stops marked with red tape to make consistent cuts and expedite production; evidence of more shaving, due to printer’s measurements in picas and points not translating directly to bindery measurements in fractions of the inch.
Bottom photo, top down: 9 individual backsides of prayer panels (giclee printed collage including song birds, their eggs, mother [Mary] and child [Jesus of Nazareth], and hemispheres of the Earth), 4 stacks of less than perfectly cut book pages, box of 11 more sets of collage-backed panels, 13 good stacks of book pages, and one set of all 12 pages to be adhered to collage-backed panels.
If you have read this far and are wondering why none of this adds up (9 panels, 12 pages, for example), 3 additional non-collage panels need to be made for each book for a total of 12. There are 12 sets of panels to create 11 books because 1 is a spare set. I would have made more but they were expensive and I am not so flush with cash or I am too cheap or I am overly confident or just brave. Or dumb. Probably a blend of all those things. The 14 good sets and 4 poorly cut sets of pages for the 12 sets of panels, same story: surplus in the event of error.
