sorry but デュ would be /dju/, not /du/. ドゥ is /du/
You know, I was thinking about that right after I posted this… Because in my book it has トゥ for /tu/, which would mean that there should be ドゥ for /du/, but there was a note that said this usage was non-standard and not accepted by all Japanese speakers. I thought maybe デュ was the accepted way. Instead though, we have this four way distinction:
ヅ /dzu/
ヂュ /dʒu/ or /dʑu/
デュ /dju/
ドゥ /du/
That is fascinating. The spelling they went with, then, is indicative of a distinctly British pronunciation of “Bardugo”—and not the one lbardugo actually uses herself. That’s interesting! My first thought would be that that’s simply how the name is spelled (e.g. if there was some standard way of spelling names, they’d go with the standard over the author’s unique pronunciation), but I have never in my life seen the name “Bardugo” before. Like, ever. I didn’t think it would be common enough to have a standard spelling in Japan. Who knows? Either way, thanks for the confirmation!
