The removal of Melissa Harmon

While the takeover of the character of Cheryl Blossom received more attention and rightful anger, it should be noted that this takeover of Melissa Harmon is not nothing. With multiple appearances, she was on her way to being an established character in the Archie Comics firmament. She made an appearance in this 1997 George Glaidir story -- where Betty relays a bunch of wacky Riverdale High records. And she made an appearance in a 1998 George Glaidir story.

i can only imagine that she was going to be as much a part of the George Glaidir Archie universe as, say, movie star Throb Temple is a part of the Bob Bolling Archie universe. And what we know of her from these two appearances is that she changes her hairstyle a lot and that she writes for the school newspaper. I am sure that George Glaidir had further plans for her, but they were evidently derailed when Archie Comics decided to dump her alongside Cheryl Blossom and erase both prominent figures from history, revising them both and turning them into Ginger Lopez.
