A list of photo books about Kowloon Walled City

I watched "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In" last week and it reanimated my Hak Nam hyperfocus. Which means as a certified photo book nerd I had to track down all books available on the subject. All bibliography data was pulled from worldcat.org. If you know any other photo books I have missed, let me know.

1) Greg Girard & Ian Lambot - City Of Darkness. Life In Kowloon Walled City (1993). ISBN: 1873200137. This one is long sold out but a digital copy is available at archive.org

2) Greg Girard & Ian Lambot - City Of Darkness Revisited (2014). ISBN: 1873200889. The updated and expanded version of City of Darkness. This one is still available from the author cityofdarkness.co.uk

3) Ryūji Miyamoto - Kau Lung Shing Chai. Kowloon Walled City (1988). ISBN: 4893420704. This one is only available at collector's prices but has been reprinted in 1997, 2009, and 2017.

4) Ryūji Miyamoto - Kowloon Walled City (2017). ISBN: 9784779123375. The latest reprint, can still be found online.

5) Shintaro Nakamura - 最期の九竜城砦 The Last Kowloon Fortress (2009). ISBN: 4797431040. This one contains photos after the residents had moved out, shortly before the Walled City was demolished in 1993. Note that the English title was auto-translated with DeepL, if you want to find it online better use the ISBN or the Japanese title. Still available online.

6) Hitomi Terasawa & Hiroaki Kani - 大図解九龍城 The Big Map of Kowloon City (1997). ISBN: 9784000080705. This one contains a huge fold-out map featuring a cross-section of Kowloon. Again, the English title is auto-translated. Still available online.

The most densely populated city on Earth, Kowloon Walled City, was anarchic, self-regulating and self-determining. ⁠ ⁠ Entering this city meant leaving daylight behind. There were hundreds of alleyways, most just a few feet wide. Some routes cut below buildings, while other tunnels were formed by the accumulation of refuse tossed out of windows and onto wire netting strung between tower blocks. Thousands of metal and plastic water pipes ran along walls and ceilings, most of them leaking and corroded. As protection against the relentless drips that fell in the alleyways, a hat was standard issue for the city’s postman. Many residents chose to use umbrellas.⁠⁠ It was a colony within a colony, a city within a city, a tiny block of territory at once contested and neglected. It was known as Kowloon Walled City. Kowloon Walled City: a lawless cyberpunk slum that really existed. Until it was demolished in 1993, that is. Two real photos and two Unreal Engine 3 renders.
