Explanation: Elegant simplicity; it checks all the boxes. Love the touch of personality through his choice of checkered tasuki for tying off his sleeves. However, he doesn't seem to be wearing on obi under his hakama, so far that I must deduct a half point. Otherwise, lovely.

Accuracy Rating: 5/5

Explanation: An excellent demonstration of the blending of Japanese traditional and Western-imported fashions that were happening all over Japan during the Taisho period, 1912-1926. The western-style long-sleeved button down shirt replaces the nagajuban (a category of underwear in Japanese kimono) normally worn under the beige kimono. This change allows him to wear the kimono layer in a more open and relaxed style without exposing his bare chest or nagajuban. Wearing his kimono in such a way would’ve been considered highly inappropriate for an upper class youth and would’ve signaled a low social status or uneducated background. His hakama are of excellent shape and volume, while the hakama ties are worn in a casual, yet small knot.

Explanation: A classic! Although his scarlet kimono and tabi are unusual for men’s kimono, his outfit checks all the boxes. He’s wearing a white nagajuban, red kimono, and white hakama. The only oversight is the bow knot for tying off his hakama which would be seen as very feminine for a man’s kitsuke.

Accuracy Rating: 4/5

Explanation: Unlike the other figurines in the Hanairogoromo series, this one could use a few tweeks. However, the pluses still largely outweigh the minuses! The colors and patterns are gorgeous! Love the blue-grey color scheme! The medium blue striped kimono is reflected in the navy checker pattern on the pale grey hakama. With the exception of his tabi, he has all the appropriate layers and even tasuki to keep his sleeves out of his way. The major problem I have is with the shape of the hakama. They are accurate through the waist and hips, but the pants aren’t pleated or voluminous enough near his feet. I also don’t care for his kanzashi, which may be there to make him a little androgynous, but isn’t really appropriate for mens wear.

One Piece DXF -The Grandline Men- Wa no Kuni Vol. 6: Usopp

Did Zoro change his hairstyle or…wait, what?! That’s One Piece’s Usopp! During the Wa no Kuni arc, it seems that he’s traded in his trademark slingshot for multiple samurai swords. At least, that’s what this new figure would have us believe. We must say, this outfit and stance make Usopp look manlier than ever!

Explanation: Now that’s a good-lookin pirate! His hakama style outfit is very well executed: the hakama are a good shape, his obi is visible underneath his swords, the tasuki holding back the kimono sleeves are nicely shaped, and his hakama-himo are doing a nice job holding his katana. However, his lack of underlayers (i.e. nagajuban and tabi) means he’s wearing a yukata, which is not something you pair with hakama.

Explanation: I’m very pleased at how lovely this figure is! The monochromatic scheme isn’t usual of men’s kimono ensembles, even if white-on-white would be a strange choice of color. Regardless, the black accents in the nagajuban, obi, zori straps & tasuki add a subtle depth to outfit and brings out the sense of layering. The black-and-gold tsubo on a chain is an unusual accessory, but is nonetheless a very elegant addition.
